Autumn Term - 28th September 2023
Message from the Executive Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers
I can't believe we are already nearly in October, the term is flying along. Today the new play frame, which was installed over the summer, was finally opened and the children were able to begin using it. It was very popular and I hope that everyone enjoys exploring it.
Next Tuesday will be our individual photograph day for the children. Once again we are offering HPP sibling sessions which I know have been very popular. Please make sure you are on time for your appointment as it's a very tight schedule.
Friday 6th will be our first HJS open session for prospective parents. Please make sure you have applied via the website if you wish to attend. This session is aimed at parents of year 2 pupils.
I wanted to say a big thank you to the FOHJS who organised the sponsored walk last week. It was a splendid success and the children enthusiastically took part in raising much needed funds. Please do send in any sponsor money and we will update the final figure when we have it. The FOHJS have sent out recycling bags for Rags2Riches this week. Please fill these with items of clothing and return these on Wednesday 4th October in either the bags sent home or refuse sacks.
We were delighted to host Freshwater Theatre in year 5 this week. This was to support the science curriculum and I know the children really took a lot from the show.
As you know, we are a busy school with some children who sometimes misplace their jumpers and belongings! Please name your child's clothes with a marker pen in a obvious place and then please check your child has the right one. We have had reports of missing items in a couple of classes so please can you check over the weekend and return any items which may not belong to your child.
We are pleased to announce below the dates for the ever popular parent showcase dates. This is an opportunity for you to come into school from 9am to 9.30am and view your child's work. The children are always so excited to share their work with you so please ensure you make a note of these.
A reminder that inkpot is now open every Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes in the library. Please ensure your child's pencil case is fully stocked (especially with a glue stick).
Finally, am pleased to share that the climbing wall will be returning to HJS on 17th and 18th October. All years will be able to enjoy this during these days. Children who are not new to HJS will be able to confirm what fun this is so we are looking forward to its return.
Have a great rest of your week and have a great weekend.

We are looking for new members for our orchestra! Rehearsals are Wednesday 3.15-4pm. If you play an instrument to approximately Grade 1 standard and are interested in joining, please let Mrs Burbage know via the school office. Thank you
Reading at HJS
All children at HJS should now have a reading book to take home. Please ensure you are reading regularly at home with your child. At the back of their home-school diaries, you will find some questions to support them with developing their reading comprehension. We encourage the children to read for 5-10 minutes every day, so they can continue to develop their reading fluency and comprehension. If you would like more information on how you can support your child when reading at home, we are running a Reading Workshop for Parents on Friday 20th October at 9am in the Rose Hall. We would love for you to come and join us.
If your child would like to read more widely, then here are some recommended books for each year group:
The Reader Teacher is a website which shows recommended reading lists for each year group, and includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction and a variety of genres. These lists are updated regularly, so is an incredibly useful website for broadening reading diets.
Reading challenges
It has been great to see some children at HJS already receiving their bronze reading challenge certificates. The reading challenges were updated over the summer so make sure to have a look at the new challenges, uploaded on Google Classroom.
Librarian visit
This week, Evie, a Children and Communities Librarian for Richmond Library Service, ran an assembly for the children and spoke to them about the services on offer at the local libraries, including borrowing a ukulele, using the computers and borrowing ebooks. Here is the Front to Back booklist, curated by librarians for 7-11 year olds:
She also spoke about Chatterbooks, a reading group for 8-10 year olds, which the children can sign up to. Details are given here:
We hope to welcome Evie back again to tell us about the Summer Reading Challenge later in the year.
Year 5 News
5C really enjoyed The Science Machine on Monday where they continued to explore and develop their learning on Space.
