The Cardinal Way

As I was talking to a staff member this week, I was reminded that too many times, we expect ourselves to be perfect. This is something I also struggle with in my life. We don't want to make mistakes and believe if we do, our lives are not perfect. The problem is perfect does not exist and is, therefore, an impossible goal. I have to remind myself of this regularly, put my ego aside, and remember it is imperfections that make us special. Our imperfections make each of us interesting, make us different, and, most importantly, make us important. We all have something special to contribute that is unique to us as an individual. I cannot tell you what a perfect student, teacher, principal, or person looks like. The reason I cannot explain the characteristics of these individuals is that they do not exist. There is no definition for perfect in our lives because life is not about being perfect. It is about improving and becoming better. My goal in life is to use my imperfections, my mistakes, and my unique character traits to make this community a better place. That is my purpose. It is my hope that Southport High School provides this understanding and opportunity to improve our students and staff. Remind yourself daily to improve. Remind yourself to be better. Remind yourself you are amazing the way you are right now! Remember, life is about improving, not about being perfect. Ask yourself every day, what did I do to improve today?

Week 34: Grateful Friday Challenge

As we wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week, let’s take a few moments today and reflect back on the teachers, coaches, counselors, aides, and other adults that have changed, encouraged, motivated, and inspired us somewhere along this journey. If you are still in contact with them, take a few minutes to reach out and tell them how they were a champion for you and helped you become the person you are today!

As we get into May, it always seems more difficult to be at the top of our game trying to hold the attention of the students, and let’s be honest -- we need a break too. Did you know that more than likely the person who is teaching in the room next to you feels the same? Let’s appreciate that. Teaching can be very lonely. But, we are not alone. We are all in the same boat and working hard to send this year out in the best way possible. So here is a song you might want to listen to to get you fired up for today: Livin’ on a Prayer (even though we are way over halfway there!)

Every single day we are working so hard to plant and water seeds diligently, yet we often do not see the fruits of our labor. Make the day of a fellow educator or colleague and share how they have made an impact!

Be a Champion today! With banners flying as we go…

The Theater Department hosted Tea with Princess over the past two weekends. The community was able to attend an interact with many of their favorite princesses and movie characters. We appreciate the support of Mr. Francis and Mr. Lundsford in hosting this great community event!

Coach Bettag and his staff invited current 8th grade and future Southport High School Cardinal Football players to SHS this weekend. The staff was able to meet with students and their families and they learned important information about their future as a Cardinal. Students ended the day by signing a letter of commitment to play at Southport.

Mrs. Wyatt's students visited the LMC for a Book Tasting this week. Mrs. Smith had the library set up as a diner. Students were able to join a dinner table with their classmates and "taste" new genres and new books! The students then would walk out of the LMC with something new in their hands to read.

This week Southport High School hosted its Scholastic Awards Night. Students from all grade levels attended to receive various recognitions and scholarships.

Mrs. Neville invited the instructional coaches to her Principles of Teaching class. Ms. Houtari and Mrs. Worley taught the principles of teaching class about different types of assessments. Through their instruction and lesson using paper airplanes, the students learned about traditional, authentic, formative, and summative assessments.
