With the increase of fentanyl related overdoses PGCPS will host community meetings to help families learn more about the dangers of fentanyl and other illicit drugs along with strategies to lower the risk of overdoses. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions following the presentation. Narcan kits will also be available while quantities last. The dates, times and locations are below.

Greeting Parents/Guardians,
I am excited to inform you that starting Saturday, March 4, 2023, Saturday Academy has changes its focus. We will be conducting March MCAP Madness!

We offer two sessions 9:00 am- 10:30 am, 10:30 am- 12:30 pm or both.

What does this mean?

Your child will be working on RELA MCAP practices, and in Math, there will be specific targeted skills per grade level to help prepare our scholars for testing after Spring Break. This transition will mean that homework provided during the week will not be our primary focus. Students will need to keep up with their work in order to receive the intensive review of skills. In doing this, it is our hope that students will make improvements in their performance bands from the previous test administration.

Our greatest deficit to overcome is the area of Mathematics county-wide. At CMIT South, we have implemented several interventions to help students. Using the platforms that we have purchased such as IXL, Achieve 3000, and Savvas realize are all ways that your child can improve his/her skill set. Khan Academy is another helpful tool that can be utilized.

In addition to MCAP Madness, we are also offering AP Statistics, AP CSP, AP Psychology, AP Literature and AP Language as course offerings.

We look forward to helping CMIT Scholars reach even greater heights this Spring.

Greetings Parents and Scholars,

I have received many Student Service Learning forms that I am unable to accept due to the following reasons:

1-Missing Signatures and Dates
I cannot accept any forms that are missing Parent Signatures, Student Signatures, Supervisor Signatures, and Dates.
2-Dates of Service
Dates of Service are to be itemized on “EACH” line. I cannot accept date ranges. Even if the activity was completed for the same organization, each date and organization name is required on each line. I have attached a completed Service Learning Form for your reference.
3-Hours of Service
The Hours of Service column is to notate the actual time of day that the activity was completed;
Example: 12:00pm- 2:00pm. The attached Service Learning Form reflects an example of this.
4-Total Hours
The Total Hours column should reflect the number of hours that were completed on “each” specific date that is itemized on the form on each line.
5-Signature of Supervisor
The Signature of Supervisor column should have a signature for each line that is completed.

I have received forms with incomplete reflective responses that I unable to submit. The attached form highlights every line and section that requires completion as well as an example of how the Service Learning Log should be filled out. PGCPS requires that the form is properly filled out in its entirety before it can be submitted and recorded into School Max. Failure to properly complete the form in its entirety will result in a delay in submissions.

Congratulations to all of our Winter sports teams as the winter sports seasons have all come to an end.

Volleyball open gyms start March 20th for any high school or 8th grade girls interested in trying out for the volleyball team at the start of August.

Middle and High Schoolers! Here is a chance to gain some Student Service Learning Hours:
Several local organizations have collaborated to produce "The Greatest of All Times Youth Mental Health Expo". This innovative event will offer middle and high school students, parents and/or guardians the opportunity to learn effective ways of managing their mental health and wellness. The G.O.A.T. Youth Mental Health Expo will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 9:30 am to 3:30pm on the campus of Bowie State University. This is a great way to usher in Mental Health Awareness Month which is recognized during the month of May. Please see attached flyer for additional information regarding the expo.

Service Learning Opportunity

Event organizers are offering PGCPS students (Grade 8-12 ONLY) the opportunity to earn service hours by volunteering to support in one of three ways.

Service Learning Opportunity # 1- General Assistance (Passing out flyers, running errands, escorting guests, providing directions...etc)
Service Learning Opportunity # 2- Talent (Musical performance, Poetry Reading...etc)
Service Learning Opportunity #3 Mental Health Panel Participant

Students who are interested in earning service hours, please complete the G.O.A.T. Service Hour Volunteer Sign up form via the provided link. Please provide a non-pgcps email address, as event organizers will directly contact students with next steps. The deadline to register to serve as a volunteer is COB March 22, 2023.

Participation in the FAME Jazz Band Program (FJBP) is open to youth musicians who are eager to grow in their
artistic expression, as well as maintain high academic
standards in the classroom. All Jazz Band instruments
are invited. This is a tuition Free program.

Students should bring a REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE to use throughout the school day.

Students can no longer drink directly from the water fountain.

I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to reach out to you to inform you about an opportunity our scholars have at CMIT South. Many of you know that tenth grade is a heavy testing year for our scholars. I have been working with Ms. Jones to discuss when our MCAP (for LSN scholars) will be held this year. The AP U.S. Government and Politics scholars will use their AP Exam to replace the MCAP; they are not expected to test on both the AP exam and the MCAP. Please proceed to the information needed for your scholar. Please also remember that Saturday Academy is extra credit for the government scholars. LSN Government will be held in the first session (9:00-10:30) and AP U.S. Government and Politics will take place in the second session (11:00-12:30).

LSN Government:
Although there is not a specific schedule yet she let me know that our test will be held around the middle of May. With this knowledge I have planned out the remainder of the third, and beginning of the fourth quarter with the curriculum provided by PGCPS. I have been working with Ms. Jones to try to allow some time for review within the classes leading up to our test, however, the schedule is provided for us by PGCPS as well. This means that the review and studying for this exam will need to be completed outside of the class time I have with the scholars. I will be working to provide resources via Canvas that you all can use at home to help prepare for this exam, however, our scholars may also attend Saturday Academy to engage in review sessions both of content, and also how to answer specific types of questions such as an evidence based argument. I have included a schedule for the Saturday Academy and I strongly encourage scholars to attend these sessions as the exam is on material from all year.

AP U.S. Government and Politics:
While planning the lessons for this class I have designed the class to be finished with learning material by the end of third quarter (ending right before spring break). When we return from spring break there will be about seven class periods before the AP Exam. These class periods will be designed to practice exam questions and review main concepts from the course, however, most of the review should be completed outside of the classroom. I have created quizlet cards for the required documents and supreme court cases for the exam, and will continue to make study material. The mateiral that I create will be posted in the resources module on Canvas. All scholars have access to My AP Classroom which provides video lessons on each topic that are useful resources as well. Our scholars may also attend Saturday Academy to engage in review sessions both of content, and also how to answer specific types of questions such as a free response question. I have included a schedule for the Saturday Academy and I strongly encourage scholars to attend these sessions as the exam is on material from all year. The 2023 Exelon Foundation STEM Academy is a free, week-long program for current 10th and 11th grade girls (class of 2024 and 2025) interested in STEM that live in the Baltimore/D.C. area. These young women will learn from women working in STEM and other leaders; explore sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate change through hands on activities; and connect with like-minded peers. The Exelon Foundation STEM Academy Baltimore/D.C. summer program will be held Sunday, July 30th - Friday, August 4th at the University of Maryland at College Park.
