Strings Update
Mrs. Woods
Third Graders have been learning lots about the violin. They have learned the parts of the instrument and bow. They can identify their violin hand (left) and their bow hand (right). They have been practicing how to hold the violin with an egg carton. They can do this at home too! They have also been practicing their Roger Rabbit bow hold. Ask your child to show you their Roger Rabbit! Next class, they will unpack the real violins and start to apply what we have learned to the real instrument and bow.
Fourth Graders have been getting organized with their instrument and music. They have been learning seated posture as they get to sit in chairs this year. They have been playing open string songs as well as learning the note names on the D & A strings. Ask them to play for you at home. :-)
Fifth Graders have been reviewing posture & note reading from last year. They have already learned three new songs and we are adding more harmony parts to the ensemble.
*4th-5th Graders should be bringing their instrument and strings binder to school on Mondays and taking them home on Wednesdays to practice at home.
Music Notes
Mr. Spector
Kindergarten is learning about the music room, instruments, and keeping the beat. Proper rest position and playing technique are paramount to musical learning.
First Grade is being reintroduced to the instruments and music room procedures. We are working on our xylophone playing technique using literature from our very own library as inspiration.
Second Grade is exploring the values of long and short sounds and deciphering them with simple music notation. We are also exploring various styles of music in the process.
Third Grade is learning about American folk music and how it came to be and doing our best to recreate some American folk hits. What a fun learning opportunity!
Fourth Grade is exploring new scales and combinations of solfege notes which leads us to learn about pentatonic scales and what excitements we can pursue therein. DO RE MI SO LA are the notes we will take on a musical journey using xylophones.
Fifth Grade is exploring more complicated rhythms such as sixteenth notes and dotted sixteenth notes in the pentatonic scales. We use xylophones to create an Orff ensemble arrangement to explore and create new music together.
