GT Program FAQ

What does it mean that my child is GT?

The National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) defines giftedness as “Gifted individuals are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains.

What is a Gifted and Talented Program?

A gifted and talented program is a specialized educational program designed for students who show exceptional abilities in one or more areas of intelligence, creativity, leadership, or artistic talent.

What is covered in GT Program?

GT covers a range of subjects to help your child succeed as a whole. These include material in Math Science Reading Writing, and the Arts. We also have topics in leadership to help students think critically through leadership. In addition to the academic content, GT services include affective skills to help GT students with the emotional intensities that come with being GT.

What are the benefits of the GT Program?

Participating in a gifted and talented program can provide students with intellectual challenges, opportunities for creativity, and a chance to interact with like-minded peers. This challenge allows their brains to grow by experiencing sufficient challenge to engage their minds. It can also help students develop a sense of self-confidence and motivation, by helping them to understand their giftedness and how it makes them unique as well as understanding what is normal for a neurodiversity brain.

Do I have to re-enroll my student every year in GT?

Gifted and talented programs are typically available for students in kindergarten through high school. Your child is automatically enrolled each year once your child is granted access into the program.

How can parents support GT students?

Parents can support their child in a gifted and talented program by providing a supportive and stimulating home environment, encouraging their child to pursue their interests and passions, and advocating for their child's needs within the school system.

Can my child skip a grade if the subject is too easy?

Some gifted and talented programs may offer acceleration options, such as skipping grades or taking advanced courses. However, this is not always the case, and decisions about acceleration are typically made on a case-by-case basis.
