Alhambra Unified School District News for Parents
Volume I, Issue 3 - October 28, 2022
Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Parents,
We all rely on technology on a daily basis. But I think we can all agree that, with all the positives technology has brought us, there have also been many negatives. Among these negatives are the ability to share/post “anonymously” and how quickly inaccurate rumors can spread. With that in mind, we are calling on all parents to partner with us and help reduce the understandable fear that comes along with some of these anonymous posts.
Recently, we have seen an increase in social media posts threatening harm to individuals or groups at our schools. We take every single threat seriously and investigate them immediately. Our local law enforcement agencies determine the credibility of the threat and the identity of the posters. Disciplinary and legal consequences are issued and we work closely with the families to ensure these incidents are not repeated.
Even when the threats are not credible, they can cause enormous amounts of stress and anxiety to our school community. They also take away school, district, and law enforcement personnel from their other important duties. We need parents to closely monitor their child’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online and the fact that they are never 100% anonymous. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please take screenshots of the posts, and then immediately report the information to the school office and/or law enforcement. Allowing children to be unmonitored on social media platforms also makes them vulnerable to criminal and predatory activities. We need to work together to keep our children safe wherever they go, including when they are interacting virtually.
We know there have been some concerns regarding the recent lockdowns, and wanted to share some reminders with you regarding school safety. Please review the section BELOW regarding school safety, and communications during lockdowns.
Thank you for working in partnership with the District, and helping us focus our efforts back onto the important work of helping students to thrive academically, socially, and mentally.
Have a happy and safe Halloween. We hope our students will enjoy their long weekend!
Sincerely,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Superintendent
P.S. In light of the recent reporting of Fentanyl-laced pills being disguised in candy boxes, I'd like to remind parents to be extra careful and to check their children's Halloween candy to make sure it is in its original packaging and does not look suspicious.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
AUSD would like to invite families to our upcoming Parent Webinar to discuss the dangers of tobacco and vape use. The AUSD Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program is designed to reduce youth tobacco and vape use by helping young people grades 6-12 make healthful tobacco-related decisions through instruction and activities.
This TUPE webinar will provide families with a better understanding of the program we offer, provide more insight into the dangers of tobacco and vaping, allow opportunities to discuss the Healthy Kids Climate Survey, and learn the importance of having an implemented tobacco prevention program. We are pleased to have Nick Koontz of The Boys and Girls Club join us as a guest speaker to provide valuable information regarding the harmful impacts of tobacco use.
To register for this webinar, please click HERE.
School Safety reminders
We would like to remind families that a lockdown can be called for a variety of reasons and does NOT mean there is a weapon or active shooter on campus. We know students and parents would like exact details regarding a lockdown, but please understand that we are not always able to provide specific information due to student confidentiality and law enforcement jurisdiction.
Please be careful of spreading information and rumors from unofficial sources. If you do not already subscribe to our social media platforms, please do so as soon as possible. We want to get information out to you QUICKLY, but we also want to make sure the information we provide is ACCURATE! Initial information will go out through social media. Please do NOT call (or go to) the school or police department for details, as they will be busy handling the emergency situation. If law enforcement is taking the lead in a situation, they will send out an alert through Everbridge/Nixle.
The school will also send out a Blackboard message as soon as they are able to do so, but their first priority will be to take care of students and staff members. School officials are often dealing directly with the incident, and may not be able to send out a Blackboard message as quickly as we can share on social media. Through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we will post official updates as we are able to provide and/or direct people to law enforcement’s accounts if they are the ones taking the lead.
Understandably, we are often limited with what we can share publicly when students are involved. That said, we assure you that if there is a situation in which law enforcement determines there is a credible threat, we will let you know and debrief with the entire school community as appropriate.
School safety is a top priority for AUSD and we work closely with local law enforcement to ensure our campuses are safe for our students and staff members. Before school opened, we held a Town Hall on August 4th to go over our district safety preparations, protocols, and strong partnership with local law enforcement. In case you were not able to attend, we have added the slide deck below for you to review.
