The SHARK Alert
Chatham Elementary School Family Update
Friday, September 15, 2023
Dear CES Families and Friends,
Happy Friday! We have had a wonderful full week of school at CES complete with field trips and our first SHARK Assembly of the year. Our classrooms are buzzing with learning and our SHARKS are putting forth their best effort in their beginning-of-the-year assessments.
A reminder that nightly homework for all SHARKS is reading. Students can read independently, read to you, or have you read to them. No matter how the students read, it all counts! The main goal is to keep our students reading and finding books they enjoy!
Next week we invite all parents & caregivers to our annual Curriculum Night. This event is for adults only in the classrooms, but we will have childcare available in the cafeteria. Please see the flyer in the "Community Events" section below for more information.
Another exciting thing next week is the start of fall after-school clubs. You will receive an email this afternoon for all clubs that your child has been enrolled in. Unfortunately, there was more interest than we could handle for several club offerings. We will do our best to make sure students get into another session of any club that they were unable to be registered for this session.
I look forward to seeing you next week and wish you a safe weekend!
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Kelly

A Note from Nurse Jaime's Office
We also do encourage COVID testing at home as there has been a sprinkle of cases throughout the school. If your child tests positive, the date symptoms began is their day zero. They should remain out of school for 5 days and may return on day 6, granted they are fever-free and have an improvement in symptoms. When they return they should wear a mask until day 10, and on day 11 they will be clear and may remove the mask. The school no longer tests the students for COVID, this should be done at home.
Please contact me with any positive cases or questions.

Dismissal Plans
You can update your student's daily plan and default plans easily via the App. Is your student a bus student? Put it on their dismissal plan. Are they going to Monomoy Youth Services or the Chatham Rec. Program? Please update their dismissal plan with the correct information. Is your child a Pick Up student? Please update the App.
The App allows our staff to direct students exactly where they need to be. Contact the Main Office if you have any questions or need support. Thank you in advance for your help!
Session I Clubs
Families will receive an email confirmation on Friday, September 15 for all the Session I clubs your student is registered. Your child is not enrolled in a club unless you receive the confirmation email. Session I clubs begin on Monday, September 18th. Please make sure to update PickUp Patrol with any changes to dismissal plans.
Please contact Ms. Deb Gebhardt at dgebhardt@monomoy.edu with any questions you may have about clubs.
Music with Mr. Toppa
Our fantastic music teacher, Mr. Toppa, offers a variety of instrumental lessons for CES students.
2nd-4th Grade students interested in learning to play the violin can join Mr. Toppa's after-school violin club.
Chorus is a year-long commitment for students in Grades 3-4. Chorus rehearsals are on Wednesday afternoons and are part of our after-school club offerings.
Finally, 4th-grade students interested in playing one of the following instruments can take lessons during the school day:
- flute
- clarinet
- trumpet
- percussion
More information about offerings and rental options can be found HERE
CES School Council
We are currently recruiting new members for the 2023-2024 school year. Meetings are quarterly and approximately 60 minutes in length. Please contact Dr. Kelly (jakelly@monomoy.edu) if interested in joining this year's council.
Tall Ship Lynx
The Lynx is a replica of an 1812 privateer ship. This model is 22 years old and its home port is Nantucket. While aboard, the 4th grade learned about life on a privateer ship, navigation, and history of the ship. It was a great morning and an incredible opportunity for our students!
Ticket Raffles
One of our PBIS traditions is the awarding of tickets. When students are "caught" exhibiting SHARKS expectations, they may receive a blank raffle ticket. Students then write their name on the ticket and place it in the collection box in their classroom. Once a week our ticket collection crew gathers the boxes, counts all the tickets, and selects one lucky winner from each class to visit the SHARK prize box in Dr. Kelly's office. Winners are announced on Mondays.
Last year our school earned close to 13,000 tickets. Let's see how many our SHARKS can collect this year!
