A Message from Mrs. Van Slyke
Our intermediate students, third through sixth grade, have been completing the state required Alaska STAR assessment. This is a standardized test that is administered online. Our students have put forth a great amount of effort and have taken pride in demonstrating what they know while completing this assessment. Please join us in celebrating your students' hard work and excellent attitudes as they return home from their testing days! The results of this assessment will be forthcoming.

Counselor Corner
Our class lessons for kindergarten through fifth grades continue to focus on problem-solving using the acronym STEP.
Ask your child(ren) whether they know the four problem solving steps:
- Say the problem without blame
- Think of safe and responsible solutions
- Explore potential consequences
- Pick the best solution and make a plan
Although there are various approaches to problem-solving, we encourage your children to use these steps when faced with a challenge. It is also important to remind students to use their calming skills so that they can do their best thinking before they try to solve problems.
Here are a few ideas where these skills can be used:
- Following through with reading goals
- Playing fair with classmates at free choice time in class or recess
- Getting along with brothers and sisters
- Completing responsibilities at home or school
Our sixth-grade students continue to explore the world of careers. Each student has their own personal portfolio at www.AKCIS.org that can be accessed at home. This portfolio will be available to students throughout their middle and high school years. As a reminder, you can review your child’s progress by asking them to login to their account from home.
Please be sure to reach out to Mr. Bultsma (907-260-1322 or sbultsma@kpbsd.k12.ak.us), if you have any questions or concerns.

Assessment Advisory Panel
The Assessment Advisory Panel serves the purpose of advising DEED on issues related to the design, development, and implementation of an effective and secure statewide comprehensive assessment system and corresponding accountability and support systems. The panel engages in discussion around key assessment topics and activities, providing essential input and feedback to DEED. Members also assist DEED with information distribution and promotion across the state as part of the effort to support schools and districts. Interested panel members should complete the AAP Application form. A committee of DEED staff will review the applications and make selections to fill the Assessment Advisory Panel and notify all applicants regardless of selection. Panel members will serve a two-year term.
