North Syracuse Central School District's weekly e-news
Issue #77 | October 28, 2022
Hello North Syracuse Central School District Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Staff,
Wow! What a historical week this has been! Sometimes it is difficult to come up with the right words to adequately express how you feel about something and now is one of those times. Since the time I wrote last week’s column, so much has happened. Our District has been involved in several discussions with Dr. Robert Simmons from Micron and I can’t begin to tell you how I excited I am about the topics of our conversations.
You may have seen news coverage about this week’s announcement from Micron CEO, Sanjay Mehotra. The announcement was attended by United States President Joe Biden and New York State’s Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Charles Schumer, among many other notables. I’m tremendously grateful to have had the opportunity to also attend this historical event but more importantly, to have two of our own students have the opportunity to be a part of history because of the relationship we’re already building with Micron through Dr. Simmons.
Sixth graders Maxx Jewson from Roxboro Road Middle School and Logan Christopher from Gillette Road Middle School took part in Micron’s Chip Camp, a learning opportunity designed to have students experience what engineers and scientists in a semiconductor company do every day. Additionally, the students were able to attend the official announcement and listen to the President’s remarks. I truly can’t imagine having had that opportunity when I was in middle school. I believe the day is one that they will never forget.
As you can imagine, a big focus of the day was on STEM jobs and education. Maxx and Logan are involved with STEM activities at their respective schools and were asked to the event because of their interest in the field. As Micron continues to integrate into our community, I know there will be more and more opportunities and more and more interest in STEM.
In addition to the focus on STEM, there was a definite I truly believe, as did all of the speakers at yesterday's event, that this addition will transform our community. As also was shared yesterday, "Micron coming here is an economic and social imperative." When I think about that statement, I think about the social imperative piece in relation to something Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said along the lines of “A rising tide must lift all boats.” All boats. All people. We can rise together and we must because of this history that is taking place right here in our backyards. Today our community truly is Brighter Together.
#NSBrighterTogether
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools
Two NSCSD Students Have Opportunity to be Part of Historic Event
Two students in the North Syracuse Central School District, Maxx Jewson from Roxboro Road Middle School and Logan Christopher from Gillette Road Middle School, had a chance to be part of history this week by attending the United States President’s visit to Syracuse. President Biden was in town as part of New York State Governor and Micron’s history community investment announcement.
Maxx and Logan are involved with STEM activities at their respective schools and were asked to the event because of their interest in the field. The students took part in Micron’s Chip Camp, a learning opportunity designed to have students experience what engineers and scientists in a semiconductor company do every day. Additionally, they were able to attend the official announcement and listen to the President’s remarks.
Maxx attended the event with his mother and father, Lori and Leslie Jewson and Logan attended with his father, David Christopher. Both dads assisted with the Chip Camp activity and both families had the chance to tour the Micron pavilion. Click here to read more about the event.
District Communications Survey Open Through November 4
The North Syracuse Central School District recently launched a campaign to strategically improve its schools and classrooms over the next five years. Using the Brighter Together five-year strategic plan as a roadmap, the district is committed to the mission of educating all students to the highest levels of academic achievement while preparing them to be productive, responsible, ethical, creative and compassionate members of society.
As part of the strategic planning process, the NSCSD is conducting a districtwide survey to gather community input about the district’s communications efforts. All students, staff, parents and community members are invited to take a 17-question online communication survey. The survey will remain open through Friday, November 4.

Save the Date Dec. 6 for Capital Project Vote
The North Syracuse Central School District is asking District voters to save the date Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022 for an important capital project vote. Polling on December 6 will take place at designated locations (Cicero Elementary School for residents who live north of Route 481 or the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building for residents who live south of Route 481) from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. A meeting about the project will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building (5355 W. Taft Rd.) in North Syracuse.
The December referendum includes $61.2 million of work to existing facilities with the majority ($32 million) designated for safety and security improvements throughout the District. An additional $21.2 million is proposed for required infrastructure work at Gillette Road Middle School and the North Syracuse Early Education Program at Main Street. Another $8 million will be used to install a multi-purpose turf field and walking trail at Gillette Road Middle School and to reconstruct the existing parking areas.
NSCSD Transitioning to Online Ticketing for Athletic Events Beginning with Winter Sports Season
The North Syracuse Central School District is transitioning to online ticketing for athletic events. The NSCSD joins other local districts such as the Liverpool CSD already using online ticketing for admission events. Online ticketing allows fans and spectators to easily get tickets and passes online supporting their favorite student athletes.
Using a free app called Ticket Spicket, students and families can quickly and easily purchase individual event or season tickets and transfer them to others. The system is more efficient for spectators coming to games and activities by allowing presale tickets and a quick phone check in for entrance.

NSEF Celebrates 20 Years of Giving in 2022
The North Syracuse Education Foundation has been celebrating 20 years of giving in 2022 and wants to use the final months of the year to get the word out about the importance of programs that have been made available to NSCSD students because of their grants. The NSEF serves a simple, but comprehensive purpose: to ensure that North Syracuse Central School District students benefit from a quality education to maintain and enhance the level of excellence in North Syracuse schools. With the unfortunate reality of diminishing local and federal funding, the NSEF has filled the desperate need of stretching budgets by funding projects and materials to enhance students’ education.
In its 20 years of existence, the NSEF has funded more than $200,000 worth of programs that have directly benefited all students from grades pre-k through 12. The group’s mission is to sponsor activities and projects intended to enhance the education and cultural enrichment of students of the NSCSD. Programs and materials provided through the NSEF supplement those typically funded by the regular school budget.
