Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone is doing well! Fall is definitely here as it's getting colder and our little Alebrijes are enjoying playing with the leaves! I look forward to seeing everyone this Saturday for our annual Día de Los Muertos event and next Monday for the Trunk or Treat 2022(more details for both events below)!
Incredibly, next month we will already start recruiting new students for our next school year's TK and Kindergarten classes for 2023/2024. The School District Enrollment and School of Choice for 2023/24 TK/Kindergarten begins on November 4th and continues through Friday, January 13th at 3:00pm. It is important that both the Registration/Enrollment Form for your home school(based on your address) and the School of Choice Form for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion must be completed by January 13th. Current PreSchool students here on our campus with Maestra Aida or Maestra Yulizma and TK students with Maestra Jennifer will have priority acceptance as long as the forms are completed on time. Furthermore, siblings of students who are currently enrolled here and at Kennedy in the Spanish immersion strand also have priority for acceptance if the forms are completed by January 13th. Please complete this Adelante Selby Sibling 2023/24 Form so we can alert the District to prioritize your acceptance for next year.
We will begin weekly informational TK/Kindergarten Tours in person every Thursday at 8:45AM starting November 3rd and the tours will continue through the end of January. Please register for a TK/Kindergarten Tour with this form: TK/Kindergarten Tour Registration. Promoting our school by "word of mouth" from parents and community members is the best way to "market" our school and immersion program to prospective new parents. When promoting our school, keep in mind that mastering two or more languages has enormous benefits for our students, both native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language(Spanish) at a dual language immersion school. Other talking points when talking about our school are that research has confirmed the benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism that are demonstrated as brain and cognitive functioning, academic, economic, and social advantages, as well as cross-cultural competency and supporting a stronger family cohesion and connection to their family heritage:
Brain and Cognitive Advantages
- Development of skills in two or more languages enhances brain-functioning with long-term cognitive benefits. Similarly, age-related mental decline such as Alzheimer’s and dementia has been found to be delayed in bilingual people.
Academic Advantages
- Mastering two or more languages prepares students to communicate in a language other than English and also increases academic performance in other subjects. For students who come to school as native speakers of the target language, also known as “English Learners,” the simultaneous development of both English and their home language is associated with stronger performance in English than students, both native English speakers and native speakers of the target language, who are educated exclusively in English.
Economic Advantages
- Fluency in more than one language and the cross-cultural skills that students acquire are prized and rewarded with higher salaries by many businesses in the United States and throughout the world. Many more career opportunities are available to people who are proficient in English and another language in the global environment of the 21st century.
Social Advantages and Cross-Cultural Competency
- Students who study other languages display more tolerance for and interest in other cultures. Study of another language expands one’s worldview and builds cross-cultural understanding, a definite advantage in the global multilingual, multicultural world in which we live.
Stronger Family Cohesion and Connection to Family Heritage
- More than three out of ten of school children in California, and nearly one in ten across the nation, speak a language other than English at home. The development of strong bilingual and biliteracy skills that include the home language and English provide them the capacity and opportunity to participate actively in both worlds, leading to a strengthening of their family and heritage culture.
RCSD Panorama Climate Survey
The District Panomara Climate Survey will be administered twice this year to students in 3rd-8th grades, parents, and staff. Parents please complete this Panorama family climate survey prior to October 31st.
Scholastic Book Fair!!
The annual Adelante Selby Scholastic Book Fair starts today Monday, October 24th and runs through Saturday October 29th in Room 302. Every dollar you spend will benefit our school directly (25%-50% back in rewards!). There is a large selection of books at a variety of price points starting at $3.00. Need some book inspiration? Check out Director Warren’s Scholastic Book List! Teachers also have set up wish boxes of books you can purchase and donate to the teacher's class for read alouds and the classroom libraries. Additionally, the Book Fair Schedule will be open before(7:45-8:30) and after school(1:30-3:00; Tuesday and Thursday open until 6:00pm) and during Lunch time(11:25-1:00) for students and parents. Finally, we also will be open on Saturday during the Día de los Muertos event. The Book Fair is located in Room 302 directly across from the Library--parents can use the gate by the Library to enter and exit. Día de los Muertos
The annual Día de Los Muertos family event will return this year in person and will be held on Saturday, October 29th from 11:00-2:00pm in the school Cafeteria and playground area. All activities will be free!
We will have sugar skull decorating, flower crown making, face painting, tattoos, bounce houses, skeleton artwork, live Dance and Musical performances and more.
Some of our families will be making traditional food to sell as a fundraiser for the 4th grade Columbia and 5th grade Outdoor Education field trips.
Volunteers and donations are how we make the event possible. Sign up here to make food to sell, help out at the event, or donate supplies.
Trunk or Treat will be In Person Walk Through on Monday, October 31st from 2:30-4:00pm. Please note the Front Parking Lot will be closed all day so Trunk or Treat volunteers can decorate the trunks of their cars and we can host our event after school. Keep in mind that it is an instructional school day and students must come following dress code. There is an Early Dismissal that day at 1:25. We need your HELP PLEASE with candy donations for Trunk or Treat: Nut free candy only due to allergies. You will assemble in the main hallways and can wait by the blue picnic tables after school with your child/family. You will then come into the front lot through the black gate by the office to Trunk or Treat. School Site Council
We approved the Parent Involvement and Family Engagement Policy as well as the Student/Parent Handbook 22/23 at our last School Site Council meeting. We see a great need for tutoring in Math as a good number of students would benefit from some extra help. We know we have a very committed parent community(we have the highest number of approved parent volunteers in the district!)that want to help and believe we can leverage the support and really make a difference. Please sign up if would be willing to help out with Math tutoring after school or volunteering in classrooms during Math time using this Google Form: Math Volunteers. Please keep in mind that volunteers must be approved by the School District using this application before they can help(the district is no longer requiring proof of Covid vaccination to volunteer). We are finalizing our School Site Plan for Student Achievement that aligns to the District Goals and will vote on and give final approval for the plan at our next special Site Council meeting on November 2nd at 3:00pm.
Unidos PTO: Direct Drive
Thank you Adelante Selby! Our Direct Drive fundraiser has ended with $34,000 donated and an expected $30,000 employer matching. This equals $64,000 total earnings, which is 71% of our goal. Thank you for supporting garden, dance, art, reading, field trips, and other programs for the students of Adelante Selby.

Inclusive Schools Week
Inclusive Schools Week celebrates our diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The Special Education Parent Teacher Association of Redwood City (SEPTAR) is taking the lead on creating a wonderful Inclusive Schools Week celebration at each of our school sites this year.. Walk-A-Thon * November 18
The Walk-A-Thon is an annual fundraiser held by Unidos PTO. Students ask family and friends to sponsor them as they walk in their Walk-A-Thon Tshirts to raise money for their school. The day of the Walk-A-Thon is always a fun and exciting event for the kids! Students will be able to participate with their classmates during the school day on November 18th. Donations will be Accepted Beginning: November 1 for the Walk-A-Thon Event: November 18

Lost and Found
We already have an overflowing Lost and Found large wooden box/clothing rack by the office. Please stop by and claim any lost item: sweaters, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, and water bottles. Parents this is another reminder that it is very helpful to label/put your child's name on your child's lunch box, water bottle, and sweaters/jackets as students sometimes forget and leave them outside. Parents please be aware that we will be recycling any items that are not labeled with the student's name in Lost and Found at the end of every month.
Child Nutrition Services: October Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

2022-23 COVID Protocols in Our School
The Redwood City School District (RCSD) is following recommendations from the San Mateo County Office of Education’s (SMCOE) COVID-19 Safe Schools Framework, which was developed for 2022-23 in consultation with San Mateo County Health (SMCH), reflecting guidance for schools and districts including from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
