Clarification on New Start Time
Please see specific Collins information below about how we will be supporting the new start time of 7:15AM.
The changes to our Collins procedures are minimal.
Doors open at the same time, breakfast remains the same and our drop-off procedures remain the same. We open our doors at 7AM and start serving breakfast at 7:00AM.
Students will continue the same procedures they always have, which is to sit with classes in the cafeteria after getting breakfast until 7:30AM (grades 3-5) and to sit with classes in the gym after getting breakfast until 7:30AM (K-2). We will begin providing instruction in these areas to students at 7:15AM to support the additional minutes with our instructional staff.
We recognize that this change may be a difficult adjustment so we want to make sure to work with all of our families and not penalize students who are arriving after 7:15AM.
We ask our families that all students arrive by 7:30AM to prioritize student safety. Some of the staff that supports our student's arrival transitions to our classrooms beginning at 7:30AM and we want all students in the building at 7:30AM. Instruction in the classroom also begins at 7:30AM so students who arrive after this time will be missing out.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Fredo at ashley.aretakisf@dvisd.net
Read Across America Week
Let's Celebrate Read Across America Day and the Joy of Reading!
Please see below for our calendar of events for next week!
Other ways we will celebrate reading this week: We will be giving a free book to every student during library visits! This week, when students are “caught” reading outside of class, they can earn LiveSchool points! We will have a book character parade on Friday, March 3rd. (This event is for campus staff and students only.)
Family Fun Night & 3rd Grade Music Performance
Celebrating Black History Month
Black History Month celebrates the achievements of African Americans and recognizes the prominent role of African Americans in U.S. history. Black History Month, created by American Historian Carter G. Woodson, originally began as Negro History Week. Since 1976, every U.S. President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
We will be recognizing Black History Month throughout our school and in the classrooms.
- Weekly feature in morning announcements created by the student announcement team.
- Library lesson during the month of February
- Sharing the story and history of our namesake, Newton Collins with students during grade level assemblies this month.
- Presentation of the Pan-African flag during grade level assemblies.
- Grade level lessons planned by classroom teachers.
