Rāmere Friday 27th May Haratua 2022 (T2: Week 4 of 10)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Bush School: Each term we are heading up to the Kamahi Reserve as part of our Bush School experience. We believe the great outdoors is a great place to be and learn so much. The Kamahi Reserve has a fine stand of native trees, giving an authentic experience for our children. Thank you to Laura McVicar and Active Southland for the support with this.
NH90: We came so close to having the New Zealand Defence Force land their NH90 Combat Helicopter at school. Unfortunately, the wind gusts were such that they had to cancel all their school visits on Wednesday. Maybe another day. It would have been so cool.
Social Media and Children: We do not expect any of our children to have any type of social media account as they are well under the required age and do not have the maturity to deal with the diversity of content that is on social media.
Further, social media is a common platform for all types of negative bullying behaviour that can have a considerable impact on a child's development. It is best left alone as long as possible.
COVID Update: We know of 61/128 (47.66%) of our roll that have had COVID. This means we continue to get a small but regular number of students testing positive week by week as the term progresses. It does seem to be a long and slow tail that we will be working through for quite a number of weeks yet.
We have plenty of testing kits here for any parents who need them.
Thank You - Team Edendale
- Home and School: The Home and School is a committee of school-focused parents who work to support the school through fundraising and event help. They meet once a term and have provided through the years a substantial amount of funds that have enabled resources to be purchased for classrooms and children. Thank you Home and School for your support of our children.
Matariki 2022
Schools are coming together to perform in what is a full and exciting programme of performances including kapa haka groups and school bands.
Entry to the event is free.
Food vendors are booked and will be positioned to create a 'food hall' experience for people who wish to purchase a wide variety of refreshments.
At the conclusion of the event, there will be a professional fireworks display.
Come along and be part of the celebration.

Our Team for this Week - Team Kereru
Kia Ora! There has been a lot happening in Term Kereru this term.
Last week we looked at artist Rob McGregor and how he used machines in his artwork. This is linked to DRIVE as we are learning about simple and compound machines in the classroom. To create the art, we followed a YouTube tutorial for the children to create a background that a machine would be drawn onto. It was definitely a learning curve to figure out shading with pastel. You will see some student artwork attached below.
For DRIVE, the children made their own marble courses that included at least 2 simple machines. These could be a ramp, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, or an incline plane. The class really enjoyed making these and liked watching how other marble courses worked. Currently, for DRIVE, Team Kereru is designing their own machine to create a poster about. It is great to see all the creative ideas that the children are coming up with for their machines. I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you that a lot of children are designing homework machines!
In writing, we are creating information reports based on a machine. Most children chose a complex machine to do it on, like a digger, tractor or bulldozer. I am looking forward to reading the finished writing.
Next week for reading, we will be looking at plays. This will prepare the class for next term as it will be time for the senior production. The plays will be recorded so Mrs Coyle, Miss den Boon and myself can decide what children might be good for certain roles in the production. Team Kereru loved doing plays before and like to act, so I am sure they will like performing plays again!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

At Edendale Primary School respect is demonstrated when we...
Are ready for our learning.
Work right through from start to finish.
Care for people, property and places.
Look after our belongings.
Involve ourselves in our school whanau community.
Every time our values are shown they make our school a great place to be for children and adults.

Term Three - Excellence Tohungatanga
Term Four - Integrity Ponotanga
Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal/Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Bonnie Garguilo-Harris for being a strong contributor, living out our school values every day.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kahu
Quinn is Team Kahu’s MVP for our value of Haepapa - Responsibility.
Quinn is a caring and helpful young lady. She arrives at school with a big smile, says hi and organises her gear ready for the new school day.
Quinn can be trusted to be doing the right thing and shows responsibility in all situations. She looks after her belongings and those of the classroom by making sure things are returned to the right place. Quinn knows our classroom routines and duties. She makes sure that jobs are completed thoroughly and shows our values as she does them.
Quinn gets her work finished within the expected time frame and takes pride in her work. Quinn understands that she must take responsibility for her own learning and progress. She knows that being actively involved in class and being focused all contribute to being a great learner.
Keep up the awesome work Quinn. You are such a great team member and a real pleasure to have in Team Kahu.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Pukeko
Every team has one of those kids who is super helpful and gets on with the job whenever they see something that needs done…Leroy is exactly that person for us in Team Pukeko this year!
There have been numerous times when Leroy has been the ‘last man standing’ - still helping with tidying up and finding little (or big) things to sort out around our classroom to get it ready for the next day, long after the other children have left the room to head home.
I especially appreciated his help with resetting the classroom after our science day with Sue a couple of weeks ago, and Leroy has been very responsible also with making sure our Chromebooks and ipads are all charging each night.
He is quick to help other people if they need a hand with their job, as well as making sure he has done his own responsibilities too.
Leroy is always on time, he has the tools he needs for his learning, and he follows instructions to complete tasks to the best of his ability. He is a kind friend who is well-liked by others because of his encouraging words and positive actions.
Leroy, you are a fantastic role-model of Haepapa - Responsibility! Many of your peers could learn from you - tino pai!
Writer of the Week - Pippa Clarke (Team Kereru)
Dragonflies
Welcome to the world of dragonflies. I am going to tell you some amazing facts about dragonflies.
The first fact is their awesome body. They have a skinny blue tail about the size of your pencil. Dragonflies' wings can move side to side and up and down. Wow! Isn’t that amazing? Dragonflies can easily catch insects because of their great wings. Dragonflies also have big eyes about the size of their head.
Nymphs are little baby dragonflies. You would think they are a bug. They have little eyes and a fierce face. Baby dragonflies are a light brown colour, about the size of an eraser. Nymphs don’t have any wings and eat small tiny fish.
You will normally see dragonflies near a pond with nature around it. Nymphs will be in the water, in the pond.
I hope you enjoyed my facts about dragonflies.
