On Tuesday, February 7th, the Motivational Speaker, Gian Paul Gonzalez, spoke to the 5th-8th grade students at CDW about being, "ALL IN." The motivational speaker shared his story of how his words became the motivation for the Giants to win the Super Bowl in 2012. He motivates students to become empowered members of their community.

If you would like to purchase apparel for this year's CDW Musical, "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella," please use THIS LINK. Orders must be submitted by Tuesday, February 14th. The apparel will be delivered to CDW for pick-up.

The CDW Musical performances are on March 24th at 7:00 PM and March 25th at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

CDW Debate Team members Madeline Iacono and Neha Anoo achieved a double win at BCA on Thursday evening! The teammates earned 27 points for their Affirmative case against Harrington Park, and they earned 24 points for their Negative case against Tenafly. The team has been working hard all year to present cases for and against the United States federal government increasing its cooperation with NATO in the areas of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. Madeline and Neha will participate in their final debate of the 2022-2023 season on March 1st at Tenafly Middle School.

On Wednesday, February 9th, the CDW Brain Busters students took a trip to Norwood to participate in the event. The students from neighboring districts were randomly put into teams. Lyla Murphy's team made it to the finals! Congratulations to all of the students for representing CDW with pride!

Congratulations to Yeonkyung (Sara) Kim, a 7th grader at CDW, who recently won the Gold Key award from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2023. Her illustration was titled, "Down Market."

The Scholastic Art and Writing contests are held each year for students in Grades 7-12, and students can apply in 28 categories of art and writing. Submissions are then judged by renowned artists in the visual and literary arts. Since 1923, the Awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists while they were teenagers, including: Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Idelle Weber, Ken Burns, Paul Chan, and Kay WalkingStick.

Grade 8 students in Art Extension are working with paint and water colors. Some of the art with numbers was inspired by artist, Jasper Johns, an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose work is associated with abstract expressionism.

It is always important to continue to remind the CDW community of safety procedures for arrival and dismissal to ensure that safety comes first.

• When dropping off your child(ren), be cautious and patient, especially at intersections without crossing guards.
  
• Students should only use crosswalks.
• Drop-off is on Interschool Drive. As soon as you reach the cones, please have your child(ren) exit the vehicle.
• Dismissal is also on Interschool Drive. Please use both lanes.
• Please do not park in staff parking spots.
• Please do not drop your child(ren) off in the BOE parking lot.
• Never park in a "No Parking, Fire Lane." These lanes are designated with yellow paint in diagonal lines on the pavement along with the words, "No Parking Fire Lane."
• Never park along a curb that is painted yellow and leave your vehicle unattended.

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

Interest Meeting for Baseball, Softball, and Track

Coaches for baseball, softball, and track will hold an interest meeting on February 15, 2023 for students interested in trying out this spring. All information, including the extended PPE/HHQ deadline, will be given during the meeting. Please get in touch with Nurse McCarthy to make sure your child's medical documents have been received/updated.

The Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE) may ONLY be completed by a licensed physician, advanced practice nurse (APN), or physician assistant (PA). It is recommended that you verify that your medical provider has completed the Student-Athlete Cardiac Assessment before scheduling an appointment for a PPE.

Any 8th grade student in Old Tappan who may be interested in participating in athletics at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School (2023-2024) should use this link to indicate their interest.

The KPO has organized a fundraiser with Woori Mart. Woori Mart is a local Korean supermarket in Northvale (206 Pegasus Ave. Northvale, NJ). For every gift card purchased, Woori Mart will donate 10% to the OTPTO. Gift cards are sold in increments of $100.

Order Deadline: Tuesday, February 14th

Gift Card Distribution Date: Feb 20th to Feb 24th between 9am and 4pm at the Woori Mart customer service

Gift cards can be ordered under 'For Sale' items on the PTO Website or by check made out to OTPTO.

The CDW Class of 2023 will be selling Pizza Kits from now until February 28th. Please visit the PTO Website to order your delicious kit!

The 8th Grade Committee is excited to bring back the Chick-fil-A special lunch fundraiser at CDW on Thursday, March 2nd. The sale is open now on the PTO Website until Sunday, February 26th.

The lunch offers a chicken sandwich or 8 piece chicken nuggets and includes a large chocolate chip cookie.

Cost: $9

Chick-Fil-A sauce will be included.

Nutrition and Allergens

Chick-fil-A cooks in 100% refined peanut oil. According to the FDA, highly refined oils, such as highly refined soybean and peanut oil, are not considered major food allergens and therefore are not identified on this list. Due to the handcrafted nature of our food, variations in our supplier ingredients, and our use of shared cooking and preparation areas, we cannot ensure that our food is free from any allergens. We prepare our foods following procedures to prevent allergen cross-contact, but products containing wheat, egg, soy and milk are all made in our kitchens. There could be other potential allergens not addressed here. Please consult the ingredients on each product prior to consuming.

The CDW Lost and Found always has lots of items searching for owners! One way to help us locate the owner is by labeling your child's items with his/her name. The OT PTO is sponsoring a wonderful fundraiser where you can purchase labels to use to label your child(ren)'s items! Click here to purchase your Lovable Labels now!

The CDW Spirit Wear store is available on OTPTO.org! The Long Term Store is open year round and orders are shipped directly to the purchaser. The Short Term Store will reopen in the spring.

As we get deeper into the winter months, here is information about delayed openings at CDW.

• Staff will be available for drop off to begin at 9:30 AM.
• Homeroom begins at 10:00 AM.
• After 10:00 AM, students need to enter through the front door for a tardy pass. Please drive around to the front to drop them off since the other doors will be closed.

If your child is not going to attend school, please contact Mrs. McCarthy at 201-664-1475 ext. 2103 or McCarthy@nvnet.org.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.

The Borough of Old Tappan has amended Ordinance 242-17. The changes are noted below:

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Charles Place from Old Tappan Road between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Kay Street from Leonard Drive between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

Old Tappan Police Officers will be strictly enforcing the ordinance.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Bergen County Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services invite all middle and high school students to enter the Stigma-Free Sticker Contest! The Grand Prize winner will receive a $150 gift card. Entries are due by March 6th. Please see the attached flyer for rules and details and see Ms. Watters for more information.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Charles DeWolf Middle School is open to any seventh grade student who meets all the membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2023.

During the week of April 24, 2023, eligible students will be identified and invited to apply

for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible

students. The induction ceremony will be held during the week of May 15, 2023 (subject to

change).
