A Message from GQES Administration!
Chameleons RISE: Raising Intentionality Strengthening Expectations for students, teachers, administration, and families.
Dear GQES Families,
Hello! Happy New Year!!! We hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday break! We look forward to welcoming everyone safely back to school on Monday, 1/8/24!!!
It is time to return to school and make sure your child is ready to learn, on time, and at school every day!!!! GQES will be participating in the Winchester Public School January Attendance Challenge for all elementary schools. Thank you for helping us with sending your child to school.
Did you know how helpful our GQES Chameleons were in December? Every child had the opportunity to make a drawing, picture, and/or ornament for an elderly individual who is a resident of THE WARREN in Shenandoah County. These residents were not able to have family visitors over the holidays due to health concerns, so these gifts really fit the season of 'giving' versus 'getting'. We are very proud of our students' thoughtfulness!!!
As we return from the holidays, we are going to reteach our routines and expectations. At GQES, students are expected to BE KIND with:
- smiling faces,
- listening ears,
- helping hands,
- respecting boundaries
- trying our best on all learning tasks.
Here are some upcoming events in the month of January 2024 at GQES:
1. All grade 3 and 4 students will take the state-mandated Winter Growth Assessment tests in English/Language Arts and Math.
2. All English Language Learners (K-4) will take the state-mandated WIDA tests.
3. After school tutoring for identified third grade students will start on Tuesdays for both English/Language Arts and Math and on Thursdays for grade four students for both English/Lanuage Arts and Math.
4. In addition to the Science of Reading where students are learning to read by learning how to encode and decode and read for understanding, you will notice your child will be doing more writing. Reading and writing are reciprocal processes; to get better at reading, we write more; and to get better at writing, we read more.
5. Please update your child's emergency contacts, addresses, custody and/or phone numbers.
Did you know that active students are better learners? Recesses increase students' physical activity and improve educational outcomes. Students learn to share and negotiate at recesses as well as have the opportunity for better social interactions which leads to better school connectedness and improved school climate! Last, students have better grades and test scores with recesses, improved attendance, behavior, and memory/concentration. This information is provided by the National Network of Public Health Institutes and Health Resources in Action. Bundle your child up for the winter with coats, hats, gloves, and boots/shoes. If you need assistance, please call our school's main office at 540-662-3575.
Make sure to ask your child about our new video announcements! We are excited to use a different forum----shout out to Mr. Slezak for helping get this project up and running!!!!
If you have questions or concerns, always feel free to contact us at 540-662-3575. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child thrive!
Sincerely,
Joanie Hovatter
