From the Principal's Desk...
Parents and Guardians,
Happy Valentine’s Day/Ash Wednesday! It has been very busy around St. John’s. Thank you to all the parents who were able to volunteer their time at our Valentine’s Day parties over the last two days. The kids had a blast and I am sure most students exceeded their daily intake of sugar and sweets. Today, we celebrated as a school by receiving ashes to kick start Lent. Fr. Don did a great job talking to the students about how they can prepare for Lent. He reminded the students that it is not necessarily about what they give up for Lent but about how they choose to spend their time during Lent to prepare for Easter. I hope our students take his message to heart and find a way to grow closer to Jesus during the next six weeks.
Don’t forget that we do not have school on Friday. Our teachers will be spending the day looking at our school’s MAP data and learning how to create flexible groupings within the classroom based on the data. Erin Reder and Anne Flick have planned a fantastic day of learning and work time to help drive instruction in our classrooms. These two women will also be presenting about MAP data at the next PTO membership meeting on February 28th. If you would like to learn more about what our school is doing to improve instruction through the disaggregation of data, make sure you attend.
Lastly, don’t forget to turn in your registration form for next year. We still have around 30 students who have not turned in a form. We need numbers so we can finalize our budget for the 2024-2025 school year. Right now our Kindergarten is officially full, and we have started a wait list for incoming students. Over the next few weeks, I will continue to interview prospective families to see if they are a good fit to join our Blue Jay Family!.
Hope you all have a great week!
Sincerely,
Courtney Weinheimer

Tony's Fight Foundation Basketball Fundraiser
Please see below for a unique fundraiser that was started by one of our previous school families. It is a great time, so please consider registering to help a family in our community...
If I could ask for a couple moments of your time. My name is Beth Even and I am with the Tony’s Fight Foundation. We have hosted a youth 3v3 basketball fundraiser at LaSalle High School for the last 7 years. Player registration is currently open for 3rd-8th grade students and we would love to invite your students to join us on Saturday, March 9th!
This tournament began as a benefit supporting my family in March 2017. In October 2016 my husband was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma stage 3ES with Vanishing Bile Duct Syndrome, followed by a Renal Cell Carcinoma diagnoses in February 2017. In March 2017 our friends and family rallied around us, hosting this basketball tournament, to show support and help with the medical expenses that come with a cancer diagnosis. With Tony’s test results clear and Tony, myself and our 4 children settled into our new normal... we decided we would like to pay it forward by continuing the tournament. Together with the help from the original tournament committee, we have officially became a 501(c)3 non-profit. Tony’s Fight Foundation was started to help families that have children in area catholic schools with family member fighting a life threatening illness, so they are not faced with the choice of their children’s education or their health.
Register for the event here.
Please see attachment below for more details and to learn about the local family that the foundation will be supporting this year.

Understanding Your Child's MAP Scores
Our new MAP testing offers rich insights into each child. We get information on strengths, weaknesses, and what the student is ready to learn next. We also use MAP data to monitor how much a child grows in math and reading over the course of the year. Erin Reder, our reading specialist, and Anne Flick, our gifted specialist, will walk you through the MAP score report so you can understand what the MAP scores reveal about your child. To get the most out of this session, bring your child(ren)'s score report to refer to--no one else will see it! We will share ideas that parents can do with their children to complement the efforts that teachers are making to meet each child's needs.
