Pleasant Knoll Middle School - November Edition
Message from Administration
PKMS Families,
We are excited to have all of our Knighthawks back at the Knoll after a restful Thanksgiving Break. We are grateful for all of our students, parents, and staff and their support as we navigate this school year together.
During the month of November, we have watched our students grow academically, show generosity by supporting our Thanksgiving Food Drive, and develop relationships with friends and teachers. Our students are taking the opportunity to be thoughtful, empowered, and connected, and it is an amazing thing to see. Our PKMS administration team is extremely proud to lead such a wonderful staff and student body.
As we transition into December, our PKMS team will continue to care for our students academically, emotionally, and socially. Our staff is dedicated to our students and are here to help. Please reach out to our teachers, counselors, or administration if you have any questions.
Finally, please join us in reminding our students to continue to wash their hands, wear their masks, and practice social distancing as we strive to keep our students and staff safe.
Go Knighthawks,
Cori Hustedt, Nick Janowicz, Daniel McCallum

Nurse News
Notes from the nurse
Sleep is vital for everyone's brain health — but especially for growing and developing kids. Without enough sleep, certain cognitive (brain) functions may not work as effectively as they otherwise could. Poor sleep in children can make memory less effective and cause children to become easily distracted and have trouble paying attention in school.
Sleep is also essential to our physical health. A lack of sleep can affect your immune system and your body needs sleep to help fight infectious diseases.
If your child is having trouble falling asleep, try the following tips to help them rest better:
1. Move up bedtime. Set your child's bedtime earlier to ensure they fall asleep when they should.
2. Establish a routine. Follow a regular bedtime routine – such as taking a bath, brushing teeth and then reading for a short period of time.
3. Avoid screens prior to bedtime. Lights from electronic screens within a couple hours of bedtime can disrupt the brain's circadian rhythms and contribute to sleep difficulties by tricking the brain into thinking it should still be awake. Bedtime reading should not be done on an electronic screen such as an e-reader.
4. Avoid late-night treats. A bedtime snack or drink could be interfering with your child's ability to sleep. Avoid sugary foods for a couple of hours before bedtime to help him/her rest easier. Caffeinated drinks should not be consumed within six hours of bedtime.
5. Avoid Long weekend lie-ins. Encourage your child not to sleep in for hours on the weekends. Late nights and long lie-ins can disrupt your body clock and leave you with weekend “jet lag” on Monday morning.
