Learn and Serve Tampa Inc is gearing up for three National Days of Service. As a Youth Service America (YSA) Lead Agency, Learn and Serve Tampa Inc will promote youth and family service opportunities, collect information on the service performed by youth around these important days, and provide technical assistance and support for partner projects and services. If you would like to partner with us, submit this form by August 9, 2023. There is no financial requirement for your organization and we only request that each partner engage youth in service around one of the two latter National Days of Service (9/11 Day can be a planning day) and report basic information to us for our report obligations. Note that there is a large window of opportunity around a "day" of service, so projects can be a few weeks before or after. This application has been reviewed by HCPS so individual school groups can sign up! AVID, IB, JROTC, NHS, NJHS, this means you!

Youth can and should create their own service projects! You just need a nonprofit or community organization, not a relative, who can attest to your hours. Per a new Florida law, all middle school Civics students and high school US History students must have 45 minutes of instruction on “9/11 Heroes’ Day” on topics involving the history and significance of September 11, 2001. In our opinion, 45 minutes is not enough time to unpack 9/11. Learn and Serve Tampa Inc is partnering with veterans groups and national organizations on Patriot Day events that might be able to support student learning. If interested in a service event, contact Dr. Verdi by August 9.

We have attached two learning activities you can use in your classroom and there are great resources available through the 9/11 Memorial and Museum , Facing History and Ourselves, and PBS. If you are teaching younger students, read this article first! For those groups interested in getting started in service, Learn and Serve Tampa Inc will host The Heart of Service lesson virtually for all grade levels on Monday, September, 11, 2023.
