The Bi-Weekly Update from Bennett-Hemenway Elementary School
Things to Know:
SPIRIT PARADE ON TUESDAY AT 2:10 PM: We are excited to continue the tradition of a spirit day parade on Tuesday, October 31 in the afternoon. This is an optional event and students have the choice to opt out of the parade or participate in the parade with no costume. Both are past practices at Ben Hem.
If your student will participate in the parade, there are specific guidelines we ask everyone to follow. Common sense and good judgment are essential guides to ensure a safe and positive experience for all of our students. If you have any questions, please contact me. Let’s figure out answers to questions prior to our parade.
- COFFEE WITH COACHES: Thank you for coming to our recent Coffee with Coaches to ask your questions and learn more about our role and the curriculum that your students engage with on a daily basis. There were two resources that we discussed and want to share with all of our families. These parent resources explain our new math program and share a list of series that students especially love to read. Series are great resources because if a child finds one they like then they have access to more books with the same characters.
- ARTISTS, MUSICIANS AND ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: It's back! Each week students are recognized for their positive contributions in music, art, and physical education classes. This program acknowledges students each week, one artist, musician, and athlete who we see making positive choices in their attitudes, effort, treatment of others, and application of skills/concepts. These choices become good habits, over time, and can be applied in many different situations. When you make good choices, good things happen - for you, and those around you!
- Our criteria for choosing students to receive some extra recognition in art and music align with our school values, specifically taking care of ourselves and taking care of others
- Taking Care of Ourselves:
- Positive attitude
- Good work habits (effective effort, growth mindset, and problem-solving)
- Doing your best
- Taking Care of Others:
- Being kind and respectful of each other
- Encouraging and supporting others to do their best
- PTO MEETING FOLLOW UP : This past week we hosted our first in person PTO meeting. We focused on Social-Emotional Learning and how we teach into these skills across our day at Ben Hem. The presentation is shared below. Please note on the CASEL slide there is a link to a video (4:50 min) that explains SEL overall. It's worth a view.
