The Cub Hub
Notes from the Den | Volume 1 : Issue 10 - October 12, 2020
Principal's Message
Happy Monday Bear Creek Cubs,
The second Monday ever at Bear Creek is in the books. We welcomed approximately 100 more students to Bear Creek today for a total of 178 students. Thank you for your support and guidance throughout the last year.
We have been spending a good bit of time with your kids - they are amazing, happy, and resilient.
Thank you for your patience as we work out our dismissal procedures. Start of school dismissal is always a little rough but I have never done it at a new school. We only had a few cars on Escarpment and that was because of a slow start. We will continue to get more efficient and we saw some obvious holes in the system today.
We enjoyed every second of the day!

AISD Reopening Plan
Please take some time to review this detailed plan.
Phase In - Week 2 October 12, 2020
Today we welcomed approximately 200 students on campus. These students included Pre-K, Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, students receiving specialized services, and their siblings along with children of AISD staff members.
On October 19, 2020 we plan on welcoming Third and Fourth graders along with their siblings.
On October 26, 2020 we plan on welcoming the rest of our students :-)
Week Three Roster
Tomorrow afternoon (or sooner) we will be sending out an email to the PRIMARY CONTACT of each student who is on the Week Three Roster. If you do not get an email and feel as if you should be on the roster contact David Crissey via email at david.crissey@austinisd.org. There are bound to be some omissions so if you are in the populations welcomed back we will take care of it quickly.
Week THREE we welcome back third and fourth grade families.

School Supply Drop
Free Meals (Breakfast and Lunch)
AISD will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch until the holiday break and potentially through the end of the school year. I saw national news coverage on Federal Lunch Programs being extended through the school year however I have not seen a local response.
Circle C CDC After School Care
We Need Crossing Guards
Technology Update
We still have plenty of iPads that are ready to go.
We also have a few several hotspots.
I received about 12 Chromebooks today ... Several of you have been waiting so let me know when you want to pick up.
Let me know via email if you need assistance by emailing me at david.crissey@austinisd.org.
Note that we do not have devices at Bear Creek - as in we have ZERO computers or iPads. The district is now a 1-1 district so you need to request a device from the parent portal. Once you have done that let me know and we can arrange for pickup.
Also note we had several connectivity issues today with people bringing their own devices - just request one if you have not :-)
Also - once you request one please let me know - the district does not notify me.
Counselor's Corner
Hello Bear Creek Cubs!
Welcome to the second full week of in-person learning:) Whether your student(s) are in the building this week, will be this month, or are considering joining us in the future, I am so excited to be face-to-face with some young people.
As things are ever-changing and students are experiencing a fluctuation of routines and schedules, parents can feel the brunt of all the emotions. Children tend to feel the safest at home to react to stress and anxiety in ways that may be unpleasant and hard to navigate. Especially if this is not the norm behavior for your child. There are tons of parent resources out there that may be helpful in understanding their behavior.
Two Resources I want to remind you know about:
- Happily Family is doing a virtual conference starting today on How To Raise Kids in and Anxious World. This is a 4 day conference where you can pick and choose what and when you attend. This is also a great website for other resources that may be helpful in raising kiddos. Look around!
https://confidentparentsconfidentkids.org/2020/09/29/raising-resilient-kids-in-an-anxious-world/ - Austin Children's Guidance Center also has many resources including online parent workshops. Check out there October schedule here! https://www.austinchildguidance.org/news-events/event-calendar.html
Our children may be going through a lot of feelings, but you as parents may be as well. It is ok to not have all the answers. Our children simply want to know they are safe and loved no matter what. 🙂
💙 Remember you can always contact me at alyssa.sheeran@austinisd.org
Reopening Discussion
If you have not attended a reopening discussion and you are returning to school this is an absolute must do. I am hoping this will be the last one :-)

Math Pentathlon Coming Soon!
Bear Creek Elementary is starting a Mathematics Pentathlon club! MP is a series of fun and interactive games for kids of all grade levels from K-5. Help your child reinforce math skills while encouraging creative problem solving and good sportsmanship. Things are going to look a little different this year, but we will make opportunities available for the kids to play together remotely, and the games can be played at home with parents and siblings to help your child learn during family time. For more information, contact Shawn Marchese at shawn2176@gmail.com, and see the Parent Handout here: https://www.mathpentath.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/ParentHandout.pdf
The Hunter 5K
Hunter 5K Halloween Fun Run
Registration is open for the second annual Hunter 5K Halloween Fun Run, honoring Hunter Henderson! The event this year will be virtual.
The Hunter 5K was created to honor and celebrate the fast and free spirit of Hunter Henderson, who tragically passed away in December of 2018. Hunter was a vibrant member of the Avana/Circle C community who loved Halloween and dressed up in costume throughout the year. Funds raised from this year’s virtual event will go to Dell Children's Medical Center who helped the Henderson family immensely during Hunter’s stay. Register today at https://thehunter5k.com/.
