Texas Senate Bill 9 requires all Texas school districts to notify parents of their district’s decision regarding the instruction of topics related to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. The district approved the instruction of these topics utilizing the Crime Stoppers-Safe School Institute curriculum for secondary school students along with other CFISD resources. The elementary school curriculum will use WHO (We Help Ourselves), developed by the Association of Mental Health America of Greater Dallas.

Each lesson will define the topic, provide resources, and share tools needed to obtain assistance if necessary. All materials are designed to meet student needs and are age-level appropriate. Materials used in each lesson can be viewed on the CFISD Guidance and Counseling web page at https://www.cfisd.net/Page/8799. Specific instructions for viewing the materials in person, if desired, will be located on the same web page under the “Anti-Victimization Curriculum” heading. Destination Imagination is a project-based learning experience that applies the creative process across seven areas—technology, science, engineering, fine arts, improvisation, service learning, and early learning—and is open to teams of students from first grade through university levels. It is also a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended challenges. Students use the creative process to turn their ideas into reality and learn invaluable skills through the process. Participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. Students gain the 21st-century skills -- creative and critical thinking, collaboration, and project management -- needed to thrive in school, in careers, and beyond. Teams have the opportunity to showcase their innovative challenge solutions at Regional and Affiliate competitions and vie for a spot at Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of creativity.

Student ID cards are provided by the district and used by all students for utilizing transportation services, making meal purchases, checking out library/textbooks, and identification of students in common areas. If the ID card is lost or damaged it must be promptly replaced. For ID cards that are lost or damaged due to the student's mishandling or negligence, there is a replacement fee.

At Swenke we participate in (PBIS) which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), the Technical Assistance Center on PBIS supports schools, districts, and states to build systems capacity for implementing a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional and behavior support. The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of schools and other agencies. PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and students from underrepresented groups.

When a student is absent, a signed parent/legal guardian note, or physician's note must be submitted to the campus attendance office within 3 days of the student's return to school. This note is to include the following information:

• Student's full name
• Date of absence
• Reason for absence
• Signature of parent/legal guardian

Acceptable excuse notes by email must include the above information along with a copy of the parent/legal guardian's ID. If a note is not provided, the absence will be counted as unexcused.

Deanna Swenke was selected as the namesake for Elementary #50. Swenke, who retired as the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction in June 2008, spent 38 of her 44 years in education within CFISD
