TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 8
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
We love volunteers! If you want to volunteer at Orlando Science Elementary, the first step is to complete an ADDitions application. Any parent, family member, or friend will not be allowed past our front desk without clearance; this is a no exception policy during school hours. https://ocps.samaritan.com/custom/503/volunteer_home
Once you get approved, what can you do? First reach out to your student’s teacher. They made need an extra hand for large class projects, help with preparing materials, or just having you in the classroom.
If the teacher does not have an opportunity for you, please reach out to either front desk staff via email and let them know you are ready to help. They will get your information to the right person. We can always use help with hall monitors, test proctors, drop off and pick up, cleaning, minor maintenance, copying, among a plethora of other tasks.
Whether you are planning to volunteer or not, everyone is highly encouraged to complete an ADDitions application. The process is not instant and can take some time. You never know when the opportunity may arise to be on campus and a part of the school day.
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” – Sherry Anderson

Curriculum and Testing Updates
THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Bradley
This week in reading Ms. Bradley’s class continued their pumpkin presentations. Students told the class the title of the book read, named the characters, identified the setting, and described one major event.
In science students culminated their unit on making observations of the natural world by using their 5 senses to observe live earthworms! Students observed their length, body shape, color, movement, and distinct features.
FIRST
Quarterman
This week in first grade week completed and presented out amazing Cereal Box Book reports. Students were very creative with the name of their cereal as well as with the design for the covers. In Science, students are learning about motion and how gravity affects the way objects may move. To go along with this lesson, we learned about how the artist Jackson Pollock used a method called action painting.
DiNuzzo
Enes for Subtraction Xtra Math
Rayleigh for September AR
SECOND
Layher
Second graders have learned so much during the first quarter of school. We are so proud of them! In math we are learning how to add within 100 using different strategies. In reading we are focusing on point of view and author's purpose. Science this week is extra fun with our STEM Challenge.
THIRD
Myers
In Mrs. Myers class, students went to SPACE for their math challenge. They completed missions to show their mastery of multi-digit multiplication and had very few “alien encounters” or mistakes.
Students also built their own mini water cycle to understand the concepts of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. They were able to witness the process and even watched precipitation fall from their models.
FOURTH
Parlewicz
In fourth grade, students are being exposed to elements of drama. They are learning about scripts, dialogue, and stage directions. We read through and performed plays and are going to begin writing our own plays! Students had a fun time acting out the stage directions with each other and look forward to the ability to have the skills to write their very own scripts!
FIFTH
MacAllister
In Mrs. MacAllister’s classroom we have been working on how to properly cite the works of others in our essays. Additionally, we have completed our ELA Unit about “Never Giving Up.” We read and analyzed short story, “The First Day of School” by R.V. Cassill and an excerpt from the graphic novel, “New Kid” by Jim Callahan. Both stories focused on students that struggled to fit in at school during two different time periods. In Social Studies, we have been exploring...Explorers! Students have been working on various mini projects about different explorers during the Age of Exploration. These mini projects will then culminate into a larger project at the end of October, where students will be given the opportunity to create and/or perform! Lastly, students turned in their awesome Summer Reading Projects!
SPECIALS
O'Connor- STEM
This week in STEM we were able to use the trash bag planetarium for an engineering lab. That's right, the trash bag planetarium- this is a dark "room" created from 27 large black trash bags and tape. It is then "blown up" with a fan so students can go inside. Students then use it to learn about stars, planets, or even build in the blacklight. This week K/1 students created homes for their glowing animals and 2-5 made neon paper bridges.
Fun fact: blacklight is not black at all, it is ultra-violet light that allows the human eye to see colors differently than it normally does.
Montes- Physical Education
Students in K-2 are working on recognizing locomotor skills, identifying personal and general space, and adhering to rules and procedures.
Students in 3-5 played four square. Four square is a fun and easy game that promotes sportsmanship, strategy, and group regulation.
McAdams
Miles Students!
SIXTH
Duenas- STEM
STEM 6th grade
Last week in STEM, we talked about Biology Meets Technology, Raisin Membrane (experiment/presentation), Engineering Design Process, Properties of a membrane, STEM challenge: Marshmallow tower; GIZMO (Rainfall and Birds Beak; Collab w/PE (Muscles & Bones); Designing Model Membrane; Paper Plate Challenge; 3D model of Arm; Bone Bridge Stem Challenge: Chapter II.
Students were able to engage in a different aspect of learning through exploration, presentations, and groupwork. They were able to develop their critical thinking skills through determining what type of materials are good for a model membrane. They were able to collaborate in a group and develop their skills in building a marshmallow tower and accomplished their bone bridge challenge. Students were also able to build their own 3D model of arm which is related to our lesson muscles and bones. This activity not only enables them to grasp the concept but also lets them appreciate how the body works and moves.
Next part of the unit includes portraying the role of a Biomedical engineer. Students will also find a way to create and design an athlete running shoe that is suitable for a specific foot type.
Spanish- Bravo
Students worked very hard making pinatas! So, it’s time to vote for the Best Piñata for this semester!!! The class with the greatest number of votes will get a Pizza party! 😊 Please click on the link below and pick just one option. The link will be open until 10/19. Share it with family and friends!

Ms. Ivette Bravo
Spanish and PE
In 6th grade, Spanish and PE departments were collaborating in a fun and engaging activity. Students learned about " El Jarabe Tapatio" dance by creating a Google slide that was posted on a Padlet, we watched a video in class, then we went outside to practice the dance with different classes. It was fun! See the pics below!

Students continue to learn more about courage, our Character trait for October representing the ORCA value Strive for Excellence.
Courage is having the ability to do something that causes fear or may be difficult. It is vitally important to instill this trait in children at a young age. One thing we all know as adults is that life promises to through challenges our way. Setting goals and working to achieve them also takes courage. Sometimes we may not fulfill the goal we set for ourselves. Although that can be disappointing, it takes courage to even try in the first place. It also takes courage to start over or try again when they aren’t successful with something the first time.
Kids will grow up to have a better future when three things happen:
• They make wise choices.
• They build strong relationships.
• They maximize their potential.
One way to help develop these skills every month is by having conversations about the Big Ideas learned at school. Conversations – both simple and meaningful – have a significant impact on the development of your kids’ current and future self. Here are some conversation starters you can try at home.
Have a great, long weekend. See you on Tuesday, Orcas!
