Recap of our last full week...
We had a wonderful end of the year assembly today! It was so nice to be back together as a whole school to share memories of our school year and celebrate with one another. In fact, this week was ALL about fun and celebration at LRE! Students and staff participated in SPIRIT week this week, make sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram posts to see our school spirit! We also had field day and Celebration Night on Tuesday, and Wednesday we witnessed our first talent show in a long time. What a great send off for our year! Please expect to see principal newsletters from me in August as we prepare for our 2022-2023 school year, have a great summer!
Don’t forget we have ONE more half day of school on Monday. Please see the information below:
Important information for the last day of school!
Juneteenth
The nineteenth day of June, recognized as Juneteenth, is a day of remembrance for the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the emancipation proclamation was issued. Juneteenth has been designated as a federal holiday and in 2023 will become a Washington state holiday. This year, classrooms across the district will be recognizing Juneteenth on either Friday, June 17, or Monday, June 20. Here are some resources for families to learn more about Juneteenth.
Juneteenth: All About the Holidays is a short PBS video that offers an introduction to younger students
Juneteenth - A Celebration of Resilience is a website from the Smithsonian with a variety of resources

Symbolism in the Flag
The star at the center of the flag has a dual meaning. Firstly, it represents Texas, "the Lone Star State," where the last remaining enslaved people learned that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years earlier. The star also acts as a metaphor for all African Americans, in each of the 50 states.
The "June 19, 1865" date was added in 2006 to commemorate the exact day enslaved people in Galveston learned about the Emancipation Proclamation.
A cloud burst or nova encircles the star. This represents a new beginning for the African Americans of Galveston and throughout the United States.
The arc that divides the flag laterally is another symbol of hope. The curve that extends across the width of the flag represents a new horizon and reveals the opportunities and promise that lay ahead for black Americans.
The red, white, and blue color scheme is the same as the American flag. This serves as a reminder that enslaved people and their descendants were and are Americans.
Information From Our Health Room:
If your child has any medication in the healthroom, it will be disposed of if not picked up on the last day of school. Please make appropriate arrangements for pick up.
Did you know that your health services team is already planning for next year?
- If your child receives medication at school, medication-at-school orders must be signed by your medical provider dated June 1, 2022 or later for the upcoming school year.
- Documentation and medications for life threatening health conditions must be provided by September 6, 2022, in order for the student to attend school.
- If your child has a current IHP or a medication at school order, you will be receiving additional communication from your school health room.
We encourage you to make necessary medical appointments now so that you are prepared to send your child to school on the first day of the new school year.

To help welcome new kinders and their families, each of our elementary schools created virtual tours, which includes a school tour and staff introduction. Watch each schools' video here.
