CogAT Testing for 2nd Graders
All 2nd grade students will be taking the CogAT Assessment the week of October 23-27. This assessment measures a student's reasoning and problem solving skills in three areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning. The assessment is a part of a balanced assessment system used in South Washington Schools. Some important ways we use CogAT data are:
- to help teachers develop the best learning plan for each child and support their unique learning needs, and
- as part of screening all students for additional Talent Development and Advanced Academic Services in conjunction with the Measures for Academic Progress (MAP) reading and math.
To learn more about the CogAT an how we use the results in SoWashCo, head to the website, To opt a student out of this test, parents/guardians must fill out this opt out letter, linked here. For opting out, return this form by October 23rd.
PTA News and Fun Run Fundraiser Updates
Our Fun Run is coming up next Monday, October 16th!!! Families are welcome to attend! Look HERE to see what time your student(s) will run. Please note that all visitors must check in at the Main Office before heading out to the Fun Run. Also, please do not bring pets to the fundraiser.
Thank you to the 40% of families that have participated in this years fundraiser!!! So far we have raised over $40,000, but still not quite to our goal.
For those still wanting to participate (and help our students earn an ice cream party), it’s not too late!!! Donate online at GetMovin! Checks can also be made to Valley Crossing PTA. The deadline to donate is through next Monday, Oct 16th.
As a reminder, the Fun Run has been rescheduled for next Monday, October 16th.
Students will run during the first 30 minutes of their specialist hour. Find your student's run time HERE. Visitors are welcome but must check in at the Main Office before heading out to the Fun Run. Please note that pets are NOT allowed. IF we raise $45,000, the students will earn a Frozen Treat Party on Fun Run Day!
- In being mindful of the students with food allergies, we have included the ice cream choices for review (Frozen Treat Options).
- All products being offered are "peanut free," however we are aware that some products may be "Manufactured in a facility that processes nuts." The PTA will provide Strawberry JonnyPops (Jonny Pops allergen info) or a sugar free option to those students requiring an alternative.
- Please let your child's teacher know if your child will need a JonnyPop or a specific choice due to dietary need.
Thank you for your continued support to Valley Crossing!
Scholastic Book Fair News
Save-the-date! Our fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held October 27-November 3rd. We will hold two family shopping events: Monday, October 30 from 4-6 p.m. and Thursday, Nov 2 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. At the family shopping event we will accept cash/checks. All other shopping outside of these events will need to be with an eWallet or electronic payment (credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc). Students not able to attend the family shopping events will have opportunities to shop during the school day by classroom appointment.
To create an eWallet, visit our book fair website Book Fair Homepage (scholastic.com) Note: any unused funds from a previous eWallet were converted into an eGift card on your Scholastic account. You need to create a NEW eWallet for each fair and can use the eGift card balance to fund the eWallet.
