Rāmere Friday 14th of Haratua May (T2: Wk2 of 10)
Our Tumuaki Principal
Kia ora koutou.
Here are some snippets from me...
- Picket Fence: Mr Rhys Wyrill (Cut-n-Edge) worked during this week to get all our Year Six pickets up. They look great.
- Kapa Haka: We have a Kapa Haka tutor for this year and Miss Nicol is our supervising teacher. They had an introductory session this week and children who would like to join (Y4-6) have a permission slip to be completed and returned. We would love to have some parents joining us as well. Please contact Kim Nicol at kim@edendaleps.school.nz if this is something you can commit to. The first session will be Wednesday 19th of May from 1.30 pm to 2.45 pm.
- Toi Maori: Last year we applied for funds from Creatives in Schools, a Ministry of Education fund, to secure support for a programme in Maori arts (Toi Maori). Excitingly, we were successful. Miss Kim Nicol is working with Sharne Parkinson, on this programme that will work with all our children throughout the rest of this year.
- Te Hurihanganui: Edendale Primary School is working with facilitators from the University of Waikato on a project known as Te Hurihanganui. Through this, we are working specifically on a programme called Rongohia te Hau where we will develop a continuum of practice in relation to culturally responsive education. We then self-assess, through surveys and observation, to see where we are at. From there an action plan for the future is developed. There is an opportunity for parents to partner with us as we journey forward. Let me know if you would like to join in.
- Community of Learning (COL) Kahui Ako Teacher Only Day (TOD): Tuesday 11th May was a whole-school professional learning day for teachers, office staff and teacher assistants all coordinated by our Community of Learning Kahui Ako (COL), for the seven-member schools (Menzies, Tuturau, Wyndham, Glenham, Tokanui, Gorge Road and Edendale). It was a very beneficial day with lots of learning occurring for everyone.
- COL Kahui Ako Combined BOT Training Night: On Tuesday evening the COL arranged a combined BOT training session focusing on the BOTs role in encouraging student achievement in a school through a governance lens. Gigi Hollyer from the New Zealand School Trustees Association was our facilitator. Thank you to Menzies for hosting us and the Menzies College Netball Club for providing refreshments.
Thank Yous - Team Edendale
- Jenny Coyle: Jenny is our Deputy Principal and has a range of school-wide responsibilities. One is these is with our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) programme where she keeps a watching brief on how all of us as a school whanau are getting along so that we have a safe, happy and enjoyable school culture for the children. Her last report demonstrated how well this programme is doing in our school which is so encouraging. Thanks, Jenny.

At a later date, we will advertise the wood for sale but if you want to get an early order in please contact Hamish Blackmore 027 636 0421.
Our Kura News and Information
We promote an active recreation for interval and lunchtime where we provide our children with lots of opportunities to engage in active and graduated risk experiences.
We have learnt that the more active and engaged children are, the fewer issues there are in the playground. Further, we know is that active children are healthy, fit and happy children. Being active is good for children.
With our many activities, children are welcome to bring along whatever protective gear that they desire in relation to their play e.g. helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, mouthguard, a change of clothes etc. As with anything please make sure all items are well named.
Bus Rolls - Help Us Help You
We really appreciate the clear instructions that we get around our buses in regards to after school arrangements for children. It makes it so much easier for the staff and the children when they know what is happening.
Thank you for letting the office know about things such as regular sports practices. We can then prepopulate each weekly list with these requirements.
Thank you for letting the office know about any daily changes prior to 2.30 pm on the day.
Remember, when coming in and picking up children, please mark them off the bus rolls as well. This saves a lot of time at our end, looking for children, who are not on site.
Uniform - Keeping the Standard
We are noticing, especially around tops, non-standard uniform items, mainly in the form of hoodies sneaking in. We have items on uniform affordably priced here at school should your child need a top.
Please, help us to have a school uniform of excellence, by ensuring your child walks out the door dressed in the right uniform.
Our Team for this Week - Team Kahu
Kia Ora,
Once again we start the term with a hiss and roar.
At the end of last term, we said goodbye to one of our Year Six students - which brings us to twenty-five students.
Team Kahu continues to be a busy work-space.
This term we have already been lucky enough to have our first visit with Sarah, our Sports Activator, and practiced some of our basketball skills. We really enjoy our time with the Sports Activator as we get to learn lots of new skills.
We have been practicing for Cross Country, which is coming up later this term. We are running every day and on Fridays we run laps around the rugby field for fifteen minutes to build our strength and stamina.
Our DRIVE inquiry for this term is based on NZ History. We have learnt a little about the invasion of Parihaka and will also learn about the land wars. Alongside this, we will explore some important New Zealanders.
Our reading will be related to the DRIVE inquiry - we are reading some Maori myths and legends and will also be researching different historical events.
For the past two weeks we have been taking part in a creative writing competition about “What’s under the bed?” This has prompted some imaginative stories to come to light. As we continue our writing for the term, we will be focusing on persuasive text as we begin to prepare for speeches.
With new devices added to our classroom, Team Kahu is learning to use Google Classroom to complete a range of activities and learning. This allows students to have their own accounts to publish their writing on and allows for student agency, as students work through assignments. The students are all enjoying the use of the digital devices in a range of learning subjects.
We are also super excited to have Mr Paul Russell teaching in our classroom on Thursdays. He has some great knowledge on the sports field and enjoys teaching the students digital technology. We can’t wait to have him join Team Kahu.
Have a great term everyone!
Ka kite,
Miss Sanne den Boon (Teacher).
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) - Term Two Haepapa Responsibility
When we come from so many different families our values draw us together as one big school whanau.
We show haepapa responsibility when we...
Are ready for our learning
Work right through from start to finish.
Care for people, property and places.
Look after our belongings.
Involve ourselves in our school whanau community.
Every time these are shown they make our school a great place to be for children and adults.
Term One - Manaakitanga Respect
Term Three - Tohungatanga Excellence
Term Four - Ponotanga Integrity
Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Makenna Letham for being a contributor of values to our school.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kea
Marty Clarke is a polite young man who shows many of our school values. This week he is Team Kea’s MVP for Haepapa - Responsibility.
Marty comes to school with a big smile on his face. He walks in making sure he greets myself and his friends. He knows our routines and gets himself ready for the day. Sometimes he even surprises his friends by getting their table ready with a chair and their pencil case.
Marty has started Term 2 with a positive attitude. He has kindly been helping the new Team Kea children settle into our routines by helping them and reminding them what to do.
Marty loves giving things a go and involves himself in our school community. He joins in with Whanau Group activities, is part of a Jump Jam team and participates in wider school and community sports teams.
Marty takes responsibility for his learning and actions. He works from start to finish on a task and makes sure he stays focused and follows instructions. Marty tries his best with everything and takes on feedback to make improvements.
You are a pleasure to have in Team Kea Marty. We love having such a great learner and awesome role model like you in our class. Ka pai!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
Sophia Gorton is Team Kereru’s MVP for our value of Haepapa - Responsibility.
Sophia is a polite and friendly young lady. She is very caring when it comes to the people around her and makes sure that they are okay if they are hurt or upset.
Sophia makes sure she is organised and ready for school each day and she makes the most of every learning opportunity. She demonstrates a growth mindset by always being willing to try new things when it comes to her learning. Sophia works hard to complete her work and strives for improvement. She listens, participates and questions, which shows that she is a responsible and active learner.
Sophia shows responsibility when it comes to property. She looks after her own and other people’s property, she puts away any equipment she is using when she is finished with it and always helps to keep our classroom tidy.
Sophia proves every day that she is responsible and reliable, which are wonderful traits to have.
Sophia you are a valued member of Team Kereru and we are very happy that you are part of our team.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Pukeko
Team Pukeko is fortunate to have a role-model like Libby Blackmore for Haepapa - Responsibility.
I know I can rely on Libby to be doing the right thing, in the right place, at the right time. She is consistent with her use of polite manner and with the kind way she speaks to her class-mates and staff. If Libby sees that a job needs done, she is quick to respond and doesn’t expect any praise or reward for it as it is simply in her nature to be helpful and kind.
Libby is always organised and ready for her day of learning - she brings back her reading book each day, has her pencils ready, unpacks her bag and sorts out her morning duties without any prompting. She takes good care of her belongings and shows responsibility and care when using any of the classroom equipment or games.
Libby also takes responsibility for her learning, working equally hard on her classroom tasks and her homework alike. She engages in class activities, asks questions, offers great ideas, and is prepared to do extra work to help with her progress - and that hard work is paying off with great results!
Our classroom and school is a super place to be thanks to wonderful students like you, Libby - you have a great future ahead of you!
