Our Tumuaki / Principal
Thank You Home and School: The AGM and Term One General Meeting of the Home and School was held on Monday. A big thank you to Louise Duffy for all her work as President. She has steered the Home and School ship well and is leaving it in good heart.
We are also grateful for the significant ongoing commitments that the Home and School have made for the school and its children in terms of direct funds to support teacher assistants, funds to help the teachers with classroom incidentals, funds to help keep us up to date with modern technology and funds to support equitable access to events for all students.
Zone Athletics: A big thank you to staff and parents for their support of our Zone Athletics held on Tuesday. Thank you to Menzies College for the use of their grounds and Mrs Emma Given (Wyndham School) for being the lead on this Zone event.
The weather cooperated really well and enabled us to get through the day smoothly. The children did so well.
Certificates will be presented at next week's Celebration Time. There is a large amount being written out as we speak.
Senior Camp: All the best to our Year Five and Six children as they head off to senior camp next week. A huge thank you to Miss Sanne den Boon for the power of work that she has put into organising the camp, bringing together the myriad of threads that make up this event. Thank you also to all parents who will support it with transport, being day helpers and being overnight helpers. Camp could not occur without your support.
Hen-house: Our hen-house has arrived and it looks great. A big thank you to Mr Rhys Wryll (Cut'n'Edge) for his work on this. The next step of this process is to establish a predator-secure area for the hens to wander safely in. We have Richard Lindsay (Tekton Services) working on this for us.
Property Security: We love people enjoying and respecting the school grounds outside of school hours. The playground and courts provide a great place to play. If you notice disrespectful or dangerous behaviour by others please contact the police directly. We have asked them and they have kindly agreed, to include the school in their 'rounds'. We love our school and want others to respectfully enjoy it as well.
Remember, for our children's safety, we do not want glass bottles around (they can break and then cause a serious hazard), dogs should always be on leads (with any 'deposits' picked up) and please note that the school grounds are smoke and vape free.
Please also note that the school has security cameras up and its buildings are alarmed.
Roll Count: This week is our roll count week for the Ministry of Education. This confirms our funding and staffing for 2023. One interesting statistic is that we are 65% male and only 35% female. Our next count is in the first week of July and this one is predictive for the 2024 year.
Acknowledging - Team Edendale
- Laura McVicar: Laura is our new entrant teacher and Assistant Principal. Laura is a hard worker. The children in her class benefit from her professionalism and so does the whole school. She gets in there and does all the necessary organisation to make an event successful. A recent example is the smooth running of our in-school athletics organisation, getting us ready for our Zone Athletics: from practising rotations and ordering the buses, to getting the relay teams sorted. Thanks Laura for being a strong contributor to Team Edendale.

Our Kura News and Information
Bus Implications of the Secondary School Teacher's Strike: On Thursday 16th of March secondary school teachers are striking in relation to their lapsed Collective Employment Agreement. This has implications for us in terms of buses. The Fortrose Bus will not run, and the other buses that are shared with Menzies (Homestead and Brydone) leave school around 20 minutes earlier at the end of the school day.
Fern Fuel Limited - Chromebooks: A big thank you to Fern Energy Limited who have donated a further three Chromebooks through their Fuels for School programme. This is so helpful for our classes.
After-School Bus Notifications: It is a very busy time at the end of a school day with parents, students, staff and messages coming through into the office in relation to the happenings of our 80+ families. There is a lot going on and a flurry of activity.
Therefore, to help us help you, we require all changes of arrangements to be notified to the school by or before 2.30 pm so that the system we use to share the information with the staff and students works.
Last-minute arrangements made after 2.30pm, and arriving in the office at an intense time, can cause the system to falter and mistakes can be made. Messages at 3.00 pm are too late as we are already moving to get children into the right places and the buses to head off on time. Remember: "2.30 makes it work."
Volunteer Required: We are looking for a volunteer with a car trailer and time to collect long jump pit sand from Fulton Hogan Gore, deliver it to school and unload it. If you can help please contact Andrea at the school office.
School Fair and Car Boot Sale: Our popular School Fair and Car Boot Sale returns this year! If you are crafty, clever in the kitchen, have pine-cones or firewood, or have been having a clear out of surplus toys, books, clothes, or household items that you want to sell, bring along your car and join in the fun!
The class teams here at school are all busy creating products to sell on our school market tables too!
See the advert poster below for details on times and other features.

Our Team for this Week - Team Kiwi
What a great start to the year Team Kiwi has had!
Every day we have a Superhero of the Day. This person is our line leader, delivers any messages, hands out books and equipment and is a great role model for the other students.
We are busy in the classroom with lots of different activities. We are all enjoying writing time, reading rotations, Prime Math, Word Lab and Yolanda Soryl phonics! We have lots of fun learning our poem of the week and sharing the big book. Our back wall has lots of colourful classroom work displayed. Come in and see!
We have been busy practising for Athletics Day which we all enjoyed this week. There sure are some great runners, jumpers and throwers in Team Kiwi!
On Wednesdays, we enjoy Action Stations time with Team Kea. We work on so many important skills during this time, including, teamwork, cooperation, small and large coordination skills, construction and imaginative play.
We are confident that 2023 is going to be a great year for Team Kiwi!

Our Kaitiaki School Board
Jubilee 2025: The school would like to call for interested community members who would be willing to help with the organisation of the 2025 School 150th Jubilee. Please send your contact details to the school office: admin@edendaleps.school.nz.
Out-of-Zone Enrolments: Enrolment at Edendale Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme. The School Board has 20 places available for out-of-zone students for the 2023 school year. The exact number of places is subject to the number of eligible in-zone enrolments received.
Applications are invited for those out-of-zone students who would like to enrol for the first half of Term Two starting Wednesday 26th April and going through to Tuesday 6th June 2023.
Applications for this period are due on Wednesday 26th April.
Information and application forms can be picked up at the school office. Applications can be made electronically through our website (www.edendaleps.school.nz) under Our School - Enrolments and Attendance. On the digital form, by ticking ‘Out of Zone’, you are deemed to be making an application.
If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out-of-zone places is required, it will be held on Thursday 27th of April.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the application and/or ballot as early as possible.
