Mustang Minute

Students & Parents
Friday Message
We survived an even shorter week than we originally anticipated. Besides the rain we anticipate next week, hopefully mother nature will cooperate with us. As I have mentioned, the spring semester is an extremely busy time of the year for a high school campus. We will have activities all the time and organizations heading all over the state. In that same vein, we have coaches and sponsors who miss time in the spring. Magnolia ISD, specifically Magnolia West, is always looking for substitutes. If you are interested in helping us fill some of these positions, please visit magnoliaisd.org and fill out an application on the Human Resources page. I know many of you already volunteer your time as a Mustang Volunteer Parent, and we greatly appreciate that. If you are interested in volunteering at Magnolia West, there is a sign up link at the bottom of this page. Also, please, please encourage your students to come to school. If they do have to miss, please make sure they come with a parent note (we can accept parent notes up to 5 days after the absence) or a doctor's note (we can accept a doctor's note at any time).
I hope you have a great weekend.
Reminders/Notifications:
1) We are having an issue with car riders being dropped off in the back of the school where buses unload in the mornings. Buses begin arriving at 6:20AM. Please know that all car riders should be dropped off in the front of the school. It becomes extremely dangerous for students, parents, and bus drivers when people add to the high volume of traffic we already have in the bus drop off area.
2) It is my understanding that Old Hockley road will be closed beginning January 25 (next Thursday). That could impact some of you and our students when trying to get to Magnolia West. ***This is subject to change for the 3rd time due to the weather.
3) We will begin Saturday school tomorrow (January 20). This is a great opportunity for students to get additional help on their Edgenuity courses and gain hours in credit recovery.
4) All students (9th -12th) begin this semester eligible for spring final exam exemptions. One of the major components for retaining eligibility is attendance. Students can have no more than 3 absences. Please encourage your student to work diligently to maintain their exemption status as we progress through the semester.
5) If your student is looking for scholarship opportunities, Ms. Cabello, Ms. John, and Ms. Kenjura are dedicated to helping them through that process. Please encourage your child to visit them in The Zone.
You can reach me anytime at jmorley@magnoliaisd.org
Thank you,
Jason Morley

National Assessment of Educational Progress
What is NAEP?
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called The Nation’s Report Card, is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in public and private schools in the United States know and are able to do in various subjects. Since 1969, NAEP has been a common measure of student achievement across the country in math, reading, science, and many other subjects. Depending on the assessment, NAEP report cards provide
national, state, and some district-level results, as well as results for different demographic groups.
NAEP is a congressionally mandated project of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), located within the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
NAEP data are also used in special studies conducted by NCES. These have included comparisons of proficiency standards across state assessments; insights from high school transcripts,
including courses taken and credits earned; and in-depth looks at how different demographic groups perform across different types of schools.
