December 2022
Hello LTHS Families,
As the weather gets colder and we approach the heart of the holiday season, our students and teachers are pushing to finish strong leading in to our much-anticipated holiday break. The first marking period of the 2022-2023 school year ended with success in the classroom, athletics, and extracurricular activities. We look for this success to continue and push us through the winter months. Hoping that the holiday break brings you time to relax and recharge as you spend time with family and friends.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matthew Reitz, Principal

Commonwealth University of PA
Recently, you may have learned of an agreement that several regional school districts, including Loyalsock Township, have entered into with the recently formed Commonwealth University of PA (which is a combination of Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, and Mansfield Universities). You can learn more about agreement as covered by WNEP-16. Loyalsock Township HS has a history of sending multiple students per year to each of these post-secondary institutions. This new scholarship opportunity may be a very helpful step in families being able to afford the cost of a college education for their student.
We wanted to share specific information for all of our students, particularly our current senior Class of 2023, to this exceptional opportunity for students and families to consider. Beginning in the Fall of 2023, Loyalsock Township HS graduates will have the ability to receive up to $7,000 per year in a renewable scholarship if students choose to attend one of the three university in Commonwealth’s system. The scholarships are tiered, and are dependent on a student’s cumulative weighted average and GPA and can award many students with financial scholarship assistance.
What is important to note is that students must apply by December 15 of their senior year. You can learn more about the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania by reviewing their website.

PSAT Results
Sophomores and Juniors who took the PSAT exam in October will have access to their results on December 5. Students will need to log in to an existing account or create a new College Board account using the same email address they reported on the exam. Be sure to check out this great resource for understanding results, by clicking here.
Students should visit the “SAT Practice” section of their College Board account. They are able to connect their account and actual test performance to personalized SAT study materials through Khan Academy.
If students are having trouble accessing their scores or personalized study materials, or interpreting test scores, they should submit a request to meet with their school counselor.
Counselors in the Classroom
Mrs. Rippey visited English 10 classes for two class blocks each in mid-November to explore a number of college and career readiness topics. Students completed several activities within Smart Futures, including two personality type assessments and an activity exploring their abilities and aptitudes. They also analyzed how these factors relate to possible career options and explored careers that match with their results. In addition, students updated their 4-Year College and Career Plan, including projected high school coursework that aligns with their interests, abilities, and future goals. The lesson will be repeated for students enrolled in this course during the second semester.
Mrs. Rippey also informed these same classes about the Pennsylvania Pathways to Graduation, a graduation requirement in addition to the 28 course credits that students must successfully earn. These pathways provide alternatives for high school students to demonstrate readiness for postsecondary success. Four new pathway options have been added to the previous requirement of demonstrating proficiency across all three high school Keystone exams. The Pennsylvania Pathways to Graduation now more fully illustrate college, career, and community readiness for all students.

Sophomore Class Fundraising
A GREAT FUNDRAISING PROGRAM!
Do you love shopping? Do you want to start Christmas shopping early? Want to make your life easier?
Buy what you normally buy. Spend what you normally spend. Help us raise funds by purchasing gift cards for the stores that you use regularly or as gifts for that fast approaching Christmas season. Gift cards have become one of the most popular Christmas gifts. Now you can take advantage of “one stop shopping” from over 80 different stores in the convenience of your home. Another great thing about buying gift cards through our fundraiser, there is no surcharge, service fee, or shipping fees: if you purchase a $25 Applebee’s gift card, you pay $25. For each card sold, the vendor donates a percent of the gift card sales; for example, one $25 Applebee’s gift card purchased would raise a $2.00 donation, the percent of vendor donation will be on the purchase form. Other examples of vendors are Amazon, Bath & Body Works, Starbucks, Target, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Gift cards are easy, convenient, and a real timesaver. Please consider helping raise funds for the Class of 2025, see a sophomore class member in November and the beginning of December to purchase. Orders MUST be received by December 9th to guarantee orders for the holidays.

A three-act play, written by Thornton Wilder in 1938 and licensed by Samuel French.
The story follows the small town of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually - in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre - die.
There have been over 30 hardworking and talented students involved in this production. We hope to see you there to support them!

December Featured Coach ~ Steve Ertel, Boys Soccer
Coach Steven Ertel has over 20 years of soccer experience which he acquired by having played and coached at various levels. Growing up in Williamsport, he played Varsity, club year-round, and collegiate club soccer at Bloomsburg University. Over the last ten years, Coach Ertel has coached soccer at various levels. Some of his previous coaching positions include: Middle School Girls at WAMS, Boys at Muncy, U-6 Loyalsock, various club teams at Balls Mills Soccer Club (girls and boys), and girls travel at Hughesville.
Coach Ertel is passionate about soccer and teaching Athletes life lessons along the way.
The current school year marked Coach Ertel's first year with the Loyalsock Boy's Soccer Programs, both middle and high school. Although some may have thought the 2022 season would be a rebuilding year, the high school boys' team had a great season, making it to the second round of playoffs.
Coach Ertel's vision is to teach the players the fundamentals of the game, along with advanced technical and tactical soccer skills, and to help his Athletes grow as individuals. He is focused on helping the players understand soccer, while inspiring and supporting their individual growth and development.
Loyalsock has very talented and intelligent Student-Athletes. Coaching for the Loyalsock Township School District has been an honor. I look forward to continued growth and success through development and inspiration.
