A Message from GQES Administration!
Chameleons RISE: Raising Intentionality Strengthening Expectations for students, teachers, administration, and families.
Week: 26: 2/5/24-2/9/24
Dear GQES Families,
First, we want to THANK every one of our families for adjusting to the transportation changes, recently. As you know, we have a bus driver shortage which means we have possible late bus runs ard or double bus runs. If you know anyone who has their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and wants to be a bus driver, please tell them to call 540-667-4253. Thank you.
We also want to thank you for following our arrival and dismissal processes. For arrival, we know that if you drive your child to our school, there is little traffic congestion at 7:20-7:30am. We also know that if you are driving your child to school at approximately 7:45am, it is easier if all traffic turns right out of our school. However, the most important thing is to be patient and safe when bringing your child to school. For dismissal, we appreciate parents recognizing we have car riders, walkers, and bus riders all moving at the same time, within the same 10 minute window. Again, we ask for everyone to remain patient and safe during this part of the day.
From Ms. Shoemaker, our school counselor: Leon the Chameleon (Leopard Gecko)
"Hi Quarles Chameleons, we wanted to take a quick minute to give you an update on our school pet, Leon the Leopard Gecko. After living a long, happy life as a Chameleon, we are sorry to share that Leon has died. While he was with us, Leon enjoyed basking in the warmth of his heat lamp, cuddling with Chame, eating crispy crickets and being hand fed super and wax worms. We will miss Leon but are happy that Chame is doing well!
If you would like to draw a picture and write a note for Leon or Chame, there will be a box by their habitat that we will use to collect them."
We appreciate you helping teach your child about our behavior expectations. We ask students to have smiling faces, listening ears, helping hands while respecting boundaries, and doing their best in all learning tasks every day, please! We want to make sure our students know how to be kind daily at GQES.
We are completing our mid-year PALS assessments (phonological awareness literacy screening) for grades K-3. If you have questions about how your child is learning literacy skills, please reach out to your child's teacher for a conference.
Please continue to dress your child appropriately for the winter weather: coats, gloves, scarves or hats, boots, etc. We will continue to monitor the weather/temperature with the full intention of going outside four times a day.
If you have questions or concerns, always feel free to contact us at 540-662-3575. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child thrive!
Sincerely,
Joanie Hovatter

Recess Research
Playing at recess helps children to concentrate in class (Jarrett et al., 1998, Pellegrini and Davis, 1993), augments their executive functioning (Massey et al., 2021), and improves classroom behavior (Barros et al., 2009, Massey et al., 2021) as well as academic performance (Rasberry et al., 2011).

We love Coach G!
When we have fun substitutes who understand how to help our youngster learn when their teacher(s) are absent, we are very grateful! Coach G rocks!!!
