The Epiphany of the Lord
Although one of the last celebrations of the Christmas season, Sunday’s Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord is just as hopeful and relevant to our lives as all of the other stories that surround the birth of Jesus. At the heart of its familiar story, this is what we find: astrologers from the east arrive in Bethlehem inquiring about the location of the newborn king of the Jews. We’re told that they had observed his star at its rising, and they came to pay him homage.
The story of the astrologers and the star of Bethlehem is unique to Matthew’s Gospel. If you listened carefully to it, you might have noticed that Matthew doesn’t even call the astrologers kings – nor does he give their names – nor does he report where they came from. In fact, Matthew never even specifies the number of the magi. We traditionally have just presumed that there were three since three gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh – were presented to the Christ child. But in stripping away the romantic layers that have been added to the story, Matthew’s purpose in telling it can be better understood – a purpose that points back to us and the need to fill the emptiness that so often exists within us.
Matthew uses Old Testament images and ideas in the story of the Epiphany. The star is reminiscent of a prophecy from the Book of Numbers proclaiming that “a star shall advance from Jacob.” Many of the details that Matthew offers about the child Jesus parallel the story of the child Moses and the Exodus.
Matthew also provides a preview of what is to come later in his gospel. The reactions of various individuals to the birth of Jesus parallel the effects that Jesus’ teaching will have on those who hear it: Herod reacts with anger and hostility. The chief priests and scribes greet the news with indifference toward the Jesus who comes to give new life and meaning to the rituals and laws of the scribes.
Finally, there is one more lesson that the Matthew’s Gospel proclaims on this Feast of the Epiphany. When the magi finally encountered the Christ child, they prostrated themselves, “did him homage”, and their lives were undoubtedly changed forever. Pope Benedict XVI described such ultimate faith experiences, like those of the magi, in these words: “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person – Jesus Christ – who gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.” The Holy Father went on to say that “faith is above all a personal, intimate encounter with Jesus, an experience of his closeness, his friendship, his love; only in this way does one learn to know him ever more, and to love and follow him ever more.” (Reflection by: Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L. Bishop of Scranton)
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope you are all rested after your Christmas preparations and New Year's celebrations.
Catholic Schools Week:
We will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week towards the end of January, and we look forward to seeing everyone visit the school at Open House to view the changes within the school and to see your child's work. This is the time for enrollment for children into Kindergarten and upper grades for next school year. Please assist us in spreading the word about Kindergarten enrollment to people you may know who have Kindergarten age children.
Re-Enrollment
Re-enrollment for all current students will begin in March. I do need to give you a heads up that at the time of re-enrollment you will need to pay the re-enrollment fee at that time. The budget has not been finalized yet, and we are estimating a slight tuition increase for the coming year. Please start to budget for the re-enrollment fee which will be around the $310 per child figure.
Family Agreement Concerns
There have been some families who are not meeting their family agreement commitments, and this becomes an ethical issue for the school community. If you are unable to fulfill your agreement you should move to the non-participation program without the school administration needing to ask you. There will be a grace period of two weeks for families to do this before you are approached regarding your agreement being changed to non-participation. It is understood that families will honor their commitments, but unfortunately this is not always the case. I wonder what type of message is being sent to the children of these families? To all other parents who are honoring their commitments, thank you.
Bingo
Bingo is an important aspect of our fundraising for the school. I would encourage everyone to try to support Bingo for the rest of the year by attending the sessions or telling other people about it. The next grade family bingo Night will be on Friday, January 19th. We hope to see you there!
God Bless,
Vincent Riener

Ms. J's Journal
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Each new year brings with it the promise of a new start. We think about the previous year, remembering our accomplishments and worrying about the goals we did not reach. We make resolutions that, if we are lucky, might last until mid-February. Instead of setting huge new year’s goals for ourselves, it is probably better to set smaller, more realistic goals throughout the year. If we remember that each new day brings a new start, it might be easier to get up and try again when we’ve stumbled.
I extend my best wishes to you for a happy and healthy 2018. May you start each day with hope and peace in your hearts. Happy New Year!
All the best,
Miss J

MVCODE GRADES 4-8 ONLY
Hello Parents/Guardians!
During this past quarter, we piloted a coding program with MVCode to see if there was any interest. I was shocked as to vast number students that came to the classes and very proud of our students' level of commitment and willingness to learn something new. With that said, we have agreed with MVCode to extend our contract for the rest of the school year. As I have been asked by parents to help with the crazy scheduling in order to have this opportunity, we are able to offer the following details regarding 2 new sessions.
Instead of coding only being offered 1 day a week, we now will have 2 coding days (Tuesday/Thursday 3:15-4:45 in the Technology Classroom). When registering your student for the first and/or second 8 week course, you will select either the Tuesday classes or the Thursday classes for your student to attend. Please see flyer attached.
Thank you,
Thomas Conmy
