Love and Logic Parenting Class- Starts November 15th
Teacher Peter Braden and school counselor Ellen Thomas will be facilitating the Parenting with Love and Logic class again this year, starting Tuesday November 15th. Parenting with Love and Logic provides proven techniques that have withstood over 40 years of testing in homes across the country. The tools you will gain are simple and effective. Using humor and care, parents are shown how to discipline their kids without losing their love and respect. We focus on helping kids develop personal responsibility, self-control and good decision-making skills. Unlike some approaches we don't use complicated reward or punishment systems that only focus on short-term compliance. Instead, we focus on nurturing longer-term relationships and reinforcing good character.
This year the class will be taught in person at Salish Coast Elementary in room 67 (up the stairs next to the gym and down the hall). We will meet once a week on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30pm (November 15, 22, 29, and December 6, 13, and Monday December 19).
The cost is $10 for the workbook. If you have already taken the class and still have the workbook but would like to brush up on your skills, you do not need to purchase another workbook.
To sign up, call the Salish Coast Office at 360-379-4535 or email Lainie Johnson, school secretary, at ljohnson@ptschools.org or Ellen Thomas at 360-379-4888 or ethomas@ptschools.org. Hope to see you on November 15th!

November Staff Feature- Naomi Horner, Paraeducator
My favorite thing about working with kids is being able to see things through their eyes. The way they experience the world and how they interact with it. I love getting to know the things they are excited about.
What are you most excited about this year at Salish Coast?
I am excited to learn everyone's names, and be a part of all the things that make Salish Coast special.
What is a fun fact about you?
My family moved to Port Townsend this summer but we have owned our property for six years. We are in the process of building a permaculture food forest and event venue in Discovery Bay. We have three teenagers, a cat, dog and lots of chickens. I love to read and Kayak. I look forward to getting to know all the Salish Coast Families.
World Kindness Day is Sunday, November 13th!
YMCA afterschool enrichment at Mountain View Commons
We want to keep you up-to-date on plans regarding afterschool programs with the YMCA. We know that this is a vital program for many families in Jefferson County and we thank you for the extra support you've given specific families in the absence of our program over the last month+.
Here are some details on where our afterschool program is headed:
- Program type: While we're not able to offer licensed childcare at Salish Coast at this time (due to lack of staff and other constraints), we will be starting an afterschool enrichment program next week (starting Oct. 17) at Mountain View Commons. The program will emphasize social-emotional support for children and activities that call upon the gifts of many talented "special guests" from our community (all guest facilitators must background checks and comply with Y child-safety standards). Enrichment sessions will also have healthy snacks, group-building games and fitness activities, and space for afterschool down time.
- Financial support: The Y is committed to making sure that no one is turned away based on an inability to pay. Here is the application for financial support from the YMCA. If children are in kinship and/or foster care, support may be available through Foster Supports of Jefferson Co., Olympic Angels, and/or Olympic Area Agency on Aging's kinship support program. We're doing our best to keep the program affordable (under $8/hr/child) and we would greatly appreciate your help in identifying other scholarship opportunities.
- # of children: For program safety and quality, we currently must cap the number of children in this program to 25 children (ages 5-12). We will let you know if/when we're able to add additional staff in order to increase the number of children in the program.
- Registration: The families who were already enrolled for childcare in the cancelled program at Salish Coast have received a registration link for signing up for the enrichment program. In a couple of days, we will share this registration link with families on our waiting list and then open the waiting list up to new families.
We all work in a county with limited, essential resources for working families. We know that you experience these challenges with us so please know that, again, we are so grateful for your patience and collaboration. We're also grateful for any insight and suggestions you can pass our way.
Grand Opening! HJ Carroll Park Friday, November 18th Gathering 2:45 - Speeches 3:00 - Ribbon Cutting to follow!
Popcorn, Candy and FREE JUMP! Logo Water Bottles to the first 100 attendees!
It's been a long wait, but worth it to be able to give the Community the best playground for miles around!
Jefferson Universal Movement Playground - JUMP! formed in 2016 when parents and teachers and local physical and occupational therapists wanted a better playground for their kids than our area had to offer. Little did we know what this journey would involve.
The JUMP! Board thanks all of the early supporters that made this possible when many questioned the need for this or our ability to raise the funds needed. This has been a Community endeavor from the very beginning with support from local individuals and businesses, along with grants from foundations and local and state government. We have had a great collaboration with Jefferson County Parks and Recreation throughout this journey.
Thank you Jefferson Board of County Commissioners for believing in us from the onset! Thank you Washington State RCO (Recreation Conservation Office) for recognizing our grant application as number 2 out of 80 applicants statewide and number 1 in the Local Parks category! And Thank You to Jefferson County Public Health for providing 100 FREE Water Bottles that can be used with the playground's new water bottle filling station!
