Important message from Mr. Hagerty

A message from the principal
Hello AMSA students and families. This is Mr. Hagerty, your Principal, with an important message for you.
Unfortunately we have experienced recent incidents at our school where a few of our students are choosing to use violence to settle their differences. When physical fights between children happen, it has a negative impact on our ability to create a positive climate in our school. We need all students to feel comfortable, safe and ready to learn and fighting and physical aggression has no place in our school. Fighting causes a disruption that puts all of our students and staff in a dangerous situation with risk of injury to anyone in the area. We are thankful for our partnership with Anoka Police Department and we have called on them when their assistance is needed with large disruptions. Fights and physical aggression are not only a disruption to the learning environment, it raises the anxiety of everyone and questions whether our school is safe. This saddens and upsets me.
I will be addressing this topic with our student body on Monday morning, but I am also asking each and every one of our families for your help to review these messages with your student.
Promoting, instigating and aiding physical aggression and any type of violence will not be tolerated in our school. Students who make that choice will be suspended and may be referred to law enforcement.
Students who record the altercation, cheer on and encourage the dispute or block staff who are attempting to render aid will also have consequences consistent with district policy.
Our expectation is that students leave the scene immediately to find adults and report the incident and not just stand there and watch. We are committed to creating a positive climate at AMSA where all students feel comfortable, safe and ready to learn, thus any physical aggression or fighting is not acceptable.
It takes all of us to have a safe and welcoming school. I want to say thank you to the majority of our students who do not participate in these sad situations and stay on track at school.
Sincerely,
Tom Hagerty, principal
