Dear KT Community:
Thank you to those who have updated their contact info in PowerSchool and set up an account. Please note - we will not be printing and mailing progress reports and reports cards, instead, they will be available for viewing in PowerSchool. We strongly encourage all families to create an account so you can monitor your students grades, attendance and progress in classes. An email was sent from PowerSchool with a link to update your contact info, and all families received an email with a unique access code to set up an account. If you have any questions or if you need these emails resent, please email Daniel Fothergill for assistance: powerschool@jpkeefehs.org. We will have a table at Curriculum Night to provide PowerSchool assistance to families.
Save the date for KT Curriculum Night - Thursday, September 28th at 6PM. This night allows you to follow your students schedule, meet their teachers and hear important class and school information. These are not individual conferences, those are scheduled for later in the year. Families will receive more information on Curriculum Night in the next week. We look forward to seeing you there!
Attention grade 12 students and families - graduation will be here soon and I want to pass along some dates to reserve.
Senior Awards Night: May 22, 2024 at 6PM (Students receiving an award will receive an invitation)
Graduation rehearsal: May 28, 2024 at 12:00PM at Keefe Tech (Required for all graduating seniors)

Important Changes with the FAFSA/Financial Aid process for the Class of 2024:
The 2024-2025 FAFSA will be delayed due to the new changes in the implementation of the Simplified FAFSA form. The 2024-2025 FAFSA application will become available in December 2023 (previous years it was on October 1st). Some of the new changes to the FAFSA include: fewer questions (decreasing from 108 to 46) and the ability to list more colleges. Students planning on attending college after high school should start learning about the new FAFSA program. Students/parents can learn more about financial aid and the financial aid process right now by visiting: https://studentaid.gov/ or https://www.mefa.org/types-of-financial-aid.
Juniors who are interested in taking in the PSAT - the sign up is below! We are offering this exam on October 24, 25 and 26th and will break up students into 3 different days. This is the first year the exam is online, so we are requiring a hard deadline for students to register of Friday, September 22 by 2PM.

Mental Health Resources for Families:
Family Resource:
The McLean School Consultation Service is excited to announce our second annual “Leaders in Youth Mental Health Series.” For the 2023-2024 academic year, McLean will be hosting 7 free parent webinars presented by McLean clinical experts. The topics will focus on childhood suicidality/self-harm, childhood irritability, pediatric anxiety disorders and OCD, navigating the mental health system for youth in crisis, supporting non-binary and transgender youth, and partnering with schools for youth services and supports.
Dear parents and guardians,
Welcome to the 2023 and 2024 school year. The counseling department has many mental health programs in store for your child this year. For freshmen this month we will teach Signs of Suicide, an evidence based curriculum that helps students to understand the signs of depression and suicidality in themselves and their friends and then how to share critical information with a trusted adult.
Teaching this course is timely as September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The troubling pattern of increased suicide rates continues to rise across the country, with youth of color and LGBTQ+ most affected, and all against the backdrop of teens reporting high levels of hopelessness, sadness, lonliness, and suicidal ideation, according to a recent report by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Another report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looking at suicidal behaviors from 2011 to 2021 shows that 13% of high school girls (and 20% for LGBTQ+ youth) had attempted suicide and 30% (and 45% for LGBTQ+) had seriusly considered it.
Visit https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/data/yrbs/yrbs_data_summary_and_trends.htm to read more trends from the CDC's youth risk behavior survey.
Another resource is the Mayo Clinic's video on how to talk to your child about suicide at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BByqa7bhto and also see the APA's pamphlet (attached) offering advice on how to talk to teens about suicide.
As always please reach out to your child's school counselor if you have concerns about their safety. We can offer resources and supports both inside and outside of school
Thank you,
