Superintendent Erfourth Update
Hello Husky families, staff, students, and community supporters,
As we look ahead to the new school year, I am filled with hope and optimism for the future. There are many projects on the horizon designed to improve the experience our students and staff have each day. Stay tuned for an update in August and the opportunity to experience the Husky difference.
We welcome Cheryl Smith as our new High School Principal.
We welcome Alex Byland as our new Middle School Principal.
Kyle Taylor will move from High School, Middle School, and Benzie Academy Principal to Betsie Valley Elementary Principal.
Sharyl Corey will move from Betsie Valley Elementary Principal to Lake Ann Elementary Principal.
Rachel Anderson will move from Lake Ann Elementary Principal to Benzie Academy Principal.
Steve Graetz will remain Principal at Homestead Hills Elementary
On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, electors in Benzie County Central Schools will consider an Operating Millage Proposal. Historically, this proposal has been on the ballot approximately every five years. Over 50% of the operational funding the district receives annually is from the operating millage.
Electors will consider renewing the current operating millage on August 6, 2024. The proposal is a renewal of the existing operating millage and revenue can only be used for operational purposes. The revenue generated from the proposal would be general fund dollars which are used for the daily operation of the district.
The operating millage, an 18-mill levy, applies only to non-homestead properties in the district. The non-homestead millage is a standard source of funding for schools across the state of Michigan. Voters are periodically requested to renew a school district’s operating millage so that the school district can continue to levy an operating millage.
The operating millage proposal on the August 6, 2024 ballot will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law. The operating millage proposal is asking to renew the operating millage at 19.2543 mills, however, the district can only levy a maximum of 18 mills. The remaining 1.2543 mills are only available to be levied to restore millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the “Headlee” amendment and will only be levied to the extent necessary to restore that reduction.
The operating millage proposal is a renewal of the current non-homestead operating millage that is NOT levied against principal residences and other property exempted by law. An owner of a property that is a principal residence is not subject to the non-homestead operating millage. For owners of property subject to the non-homestead operating millage, the operating millage proposal on the August 6, 2024 ballot is a renewal of the existing non-homestead operating millage.
