In honor of Veteran's Day, we would like to recognize those who have served in the U.S. military and are a part of our school-community. We are collecting photographs to display during our school community-gathering where a portion of our program will be dedicated to honor our military veterans.

Leonardtown Elementary will be represented by 3 fifth-grade students at the Veteran's Day Memorial Ceremony. Andrew Mickley, Amelia Selk and Ryan Ritchie will be reading their essays on the topic "What Veteran's Day Means to Me".

All families are invited to participate in the parade procession, which begins at 10 am at St. Mary's Ryken (SMR). Parade participants will carry the L.E.S. banner and stroll along the parade route which goes from SMR, down Fenwick Street and around the Square. Please join the LES PTA as we walk in solidarity to honor those who have served at the Leonardtown Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11. The Memorial Ceremony follows immediately.

If you are interested in attending, please be sure to reach out to the PTA. We are in need of 1 volunteer who would be willing to coordinate our parade guests. If we are unable to secure somebody for this, then we will unfortunately have to cancel our participation. Please consider helping!

Students who were absent or not enrolled on our first picture day in September will be photographed on Tuesday, November 7th.

If you ordered photos and are not satisfied, you may also have your child's photo re-taken.

Send your child with the original photo package, including the original envelope and all picture products, to turn into the photographer when they come to sit for a new picture. You do not need to fill out a new order form.

The St. Mary's County School Nutrition Association is conducting a food drive to help the families in our community that are in need. Our student council will be collecting food pantry donations beginning November 13th. All of the food collected will be donated to a north-end and south-end food pantry.

Details will come after Tuesday's LES Student Council meeting.

St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) receives additional federal funding based on our SMCPS parent(s)/legal guardian(s) who work on federal property, live on federal property, and/or are active duty military. SMCPS is required to survey each student's family to determine eligibility for these additional funds.

Additionally, please complete the SMCPS Online Emergency Form. Effective communication is critical to the success of St. Mary’s County Public Schools. Updated information is crucial for timely and effective communication with families for notification of emergencies and general information.

The attached letter, from Dr. James S. Smith, Superintendent of School, provides the links to complete the above-mentioned surveys through the Home Access Center (HAC). Forms for each student must be completed by Tuesday, November 14, 2023. We appreciate your cooperation in completing these forms.

2023-2024 Impact Aid Reminder from SMCPS Superintendent

Parents who are choosing to share a treat with their child's class as part of birthday celebrations have been asked to consider non-food items and notify the teacher if a "treat" is being provided to distribute. As we approach holidays that typically involve candy (think Halloween, Valentine's Day), we wanted to remind everyone of our concern for students with food allergies.

Here are some non-food items that you could consider if you are hoping to share something with the class:

• "Slap" bracelets
• Trading cards
• Color-click pens
• Pop-its, Figit spinners and the like
• Smencils (scented pencils)
