Principal's Message ๐
Our staff has been learning and reflecting on our instructional practices. As professionals, we are always looking for ways to improve our work and therefore improve student learning experiences. Our Instructional Leadership Team supports the work of teachers through professional development and collaboration. Some members of our team, along with myself, have been attending an ongoing conference about Professional Learning Communities. At our last meeting we read two articles discussing the purpose of effective leadership teams and created this our our purpose of our Murwood Instructional Leadership Team:
The purpose of our instructional leadership team is primarily to guide the work of becoming a PLC school by focusing on student learning, teacher practices, and school culture.
5th Grade Call to Action
The 5th graders have been studying Native America for their first social studies unit of the school year. They spent the unit looking at the ways that various tribes across the country let the land shape their culture, then passed the culture on through artifacts and stories.
They also discussed the way they honor the land locally. In the social studies program, there is a component at the end of each unit called a โCall to Action.โ Here, classes brainstormed ways to take action in the community (in this case to communicate how crucial Indigenous People were to settling our area and honoring the land). Students created art that portrays Indigenous Bay Miwok people surveying the land of Walnut Creek.
The art is now on display at City Hall. We all hope you enjoy the art, and thank you to the City of Walnut Creek for giving us the opportunity to take action in honoring the culture of our land.

Annual Book Swap! ๐๐
We are two weeks away from our annual Book Swap and are now accepting books! Students may bring used books (in good condition) now through Friday, December 15th. Bring in as many books as you'd like--for each book turned in, the student will be able to choose one "new" book that another student has donated (up to 10 "new" books per person). The book swap will take place during library times the week of December 18-22.
Our goal is to provide every student at Murwood with at least one "new" book even if they are unable to bring in any used ones of their own. Please contact me at ljones@walnutcreeksd.org with any questions.
Notes From the Office
Lost and Found
You may have noticed the HUGE assortment of jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes etc. in our Lost & Found. In an effort to help reunite these lost and misplaced items, we will have everything on display in front of the school (weather permitting) next week. If your child is missing something, stop by and take a look. Any items left after 12/22 will be donated.
Thank you,
Mrs. Kaye, Office Manager
