The Wayland Union School Board met on Monday, May 23, 2022, at Wayland Union High School for their work session. There were no public comments shared at the Board Work Session.
Work Session Topics
Review of Applications and Interviews for Appointed Board Seat
- Two applications received from Jake Gless and Norman Taylor. Both candidates were interviewed during the Work Session.
Student Handbook Discussion Item - Student Backpacks
- Student Handbooks are being revised for the 2022-2023 school year. The Student Handbooks will be presented to the Board at the June 13 Board Meeting. Prior to presenting the first draft student handbook, the Board discussed the use of student backpacks.
- Further information will be provided through the Student Handbook for the 2022-2023 school year this summer.
Information Only - Security Camera Cabling
- Quotes were presented for the ESSER III funded security camera project, in particular for the project’s cabling portion.
- Buist Electric has secured the project with a quote of $17,309.
New Business
Deliberation on Appointed Board Seat
- Deliberation took place giving consideration to the two candidates. The Board expressed appreciation for the two candidates who applied for this open seat.
2022-2023 Administrator Contracts and Wage Schedule
- The updated contracts contract for all district administrators was presented and discussed as well as a suggested wage scale increase of 2.8%.
- Approval for this proposal will be determined at the June 13 Regular Board Meeting.
Proposed 2022-2023 Non-Affiliated Wage Scale
- The school attorney has suggested that the district reinstate non-affiliated contracts. The contracts were discussed as well as a suggested 2.8% wage increase.

Old Business
Selected Candidate for Appointed Board Seat
- Norm Taylor was unanimously selected to fill the opening made by Toni Ordway’s resignation due to moving outside the district limits. Congratulations and Welcome to the Board of Education Mr. Taylor!

Purchase of Smoker for High School Food Service Program
- Approved
