- Civility, Kindness, and Respect is required by everyone – Following up on the War between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East
As the war with Israel and Hamas continues, we know that this continues to create a very stressful and anxious time for so many of our students, families, our entire community, and families around the world, especially with those who have friends and family in the middle of it all. During these difficult times, please let us be clear that violence and hate have NO place in our community or in the world we live in. You may have seen news clips showing upticks in hate speech in our community, on college campuses, and around the world. Hate Speech is not only a violation of school policy, it is also a violation of state and national laws. Law enforcement will take action if hate speech or hate symbols are used against any group.
Please know that our faculty, staff, counselors, and administrators are here to listen to you and to support you. Do not hesitate to reach out if you want to talk or just take a break. These events affect everyone in many different ways. Please take care of yourself and keep an eye out for friends, fellow colleagues, or students who might be affected.
We are here to support EVERYONE and continue to offer a school environment that is safe and welcoming for everyone. Seek out a safe adult, counselor, administrator, or teacher if you want to talk or express your concerns. I am happy to meet with any students or groups of students to talk. We have done this already and will continue to do so.
With that said, we will not and cannot allow discrimination or harassment based on religion or national origin. This is what the Dignity for All Students Act is all about (DASA). To be specific, we will not tolerate anti-Semitic, anti-Israeli, Islamophobic, or anti-Palestinian prejudice at BHS.
If you experience this kind of discrimination or harassment, seek out a safe adult, including your parents, teachers, counselor, administrator, or me to discuss. You can do this in person, through a DASA form (attached), through our SAFE SCHOOLS HELPLINE, through e-mail, or by submitting an anonymous tip in the Bruin Mailbox near the counseling office.
We will address these issues and work to support and educate our kids as we do with any DASA or hate related actions. At BHS, EVERYONE has the right to attend school in an environment that is safe, welcoming, caring, professional, and free from harassment. As I always say, BHS Believes that everyone has the right to attend school in an environment that is safe, welcoming, caring, professional, and free from harassment. I appreciate everyone each and every day who helps to make that statement a reality for the 1200 plus kids and 200 plus adults who come to BHS each day. Brighton Believes Packet

Diwali Day
Diwali is a “festival of lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. The name comes from Sanksrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” On the night of Diwali, celebrants light dozens of candles and clay lamps (called diyas), placing them throughout their homes and in the streets to light up the dark night. Diwali is primarily celebrated by followers of the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths. Though technically religious, it's also become a cultural event in North America celebrated with sweets and special foods. This year Diwali Day will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12, 2023.
Learn more about Diwali by watching a video from National Geographic and by checking out some picture books shared by PBS!

Current COVID Guidelines
The CDC recommends that people who have symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home. Testing is recommended for people with symptoms of COVID-19 as soon as possible after symptoms begin.
- If people test positive for COVID-19, they should stay home for at least 5 days and isolate.
- Isolation may end after Day 5 IF people are fever-free for 24-hours without fever-reducing medication AND their symptoms are improving.
- Day 0 being day of symptom onset or positive test.
- If symptoms are NOT improving, the CDC recommends that the person continue to isolate until symptoms improve and they are fever-free for 24-hours without fever-reducing medication.
- After the person has ended isolation and when symptoms have improved, the CDC recommends that people wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask through Day 10, OR until two rapid tests, taken 48-hours apart, are both negative.
