Hello North Rockland Families:
This was another strong week across the board - in NR classrooms, on stages, fields, courts and during after school programs our students are accomplishing remarkable things.
During the first half of the school year our main focus is on developing a routine that serves as the basis for student success. Our learners are now all very well-versed in our classroom’s established day to day operations which prepares and allows them to switch gears to participate in a busy celebratory week, attend assemblies, field trips or other fun activities prior to winter break.
The week before a break, when heavy with work or testing, can leave K-12 students feeling stressed or overwhelmed, which then carries over into their off time. NRCSD’s strategy to navigate this to everyone’s benefit is to use pre-break time to structure in the important activities or fun kids and teachers love, but do not regularly have time for.
Knowing what our students can handle and still maintaining standards of excellence, continues to result in the perfect balance of novelty and predictability.
When we return Monday of next week we will have reached a milestone in the 2022-23 school year, the 100th day of school. We look forward to celebrating the occasion NR Strong and NR Together!
In addition next week is also SPIRIT week at NRHS, our upper elementary school’s will be taking trips to visit West Point, the Harlem Wizards are coming to Thiells Elementary, Valentine's Day and Black History Month assemblies are kicking off districtwide and Fieldstone Middle schoolers will be recognized during Honor Roll Ceremonies.
As a reminder, all schools are closed for Mid-Winter Recess. Students and staff will resume instruction on Monday, February 27th.
NRCSD Budget
For the Board of Education and Administration, developing a budget that is both educationally sound and fiscally responsible is an important and comprehensive process. The 2023-24 budget continues our mission of providing a safe, caring, and positive learning environment in which all students can achieve their maximum potential and acquire the skills, attitudes, and abilities needed to succeed in an ever-changing world. It is the District's goal to provide our students with an exemplary experience while controlling taxes for our community. We understand the fiscal challenges that living in Rockland County pose.
As always, our budget fully supports the curriculum, instruction, and professional development that addresses the needs of all learners. Our budget also includes the expanded use of certain “green technologies” and facility improvements to enhance our learning and working environments while achieving real cost savings. District Spotlight
National School Counselors Week
In honor of NSCW23 (Feb 6-10) the District spotlight is on NR counselors, who are “Helping Students Dream Big” and make it happen every day. This week we celebrate the impact NRCSD counselors have in helping students reach maximum school success and plan for a career. Our team has provided countless college fairs, trips, speakers, supports and every opportunity for access and equity for all students.
Their work helps create an environment where dreams can become a reality by equipping learners with tools like academic achievement strategies, managing emotions, applying interpersonal skills and planning for post secondary options. We recognize the improved student outcomes, more informed college and career decision-making and doer culture counselors are responsible for. Thank you for preparing students to take on the next step in their lives and overall well-being. Thank a Counselor here.
NR Alumni Workshops Have Far Reach
Wellness Wisdom: Believing in yourself may be the most fundamental tool. Let it navigate you towards what you want.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
NR Dual Language Program Sign-Up
The NR Dual Language Program provides students the opportunity to learn academic content (math, science, social, and social studies) while also learning to speak, read, and write at a high academic level in Spanish & English. Students enter the dual language program in Kindergarten and commit to remain in the program through sixth grade. Students follow the same curriculum as their peers in English instruction classrooms with the expectation that they meet the same state standards. The program follows a 50/50 model in which students learn their subjects 50% of the time in English and 50% of the time in Spanish. The NR K-6 Dual Language Program is an enrichment program available by lottery to all families of incoming kindergarten students. For more information about the program, please see the attached flier. The 2023-2024 Application Window is February 1-17, 2023. If there are more applicants than slots, we will hold a lottery February 28, 2023, 11AM at the Central Administration Building.

UPK Expansion Grant
The North Rockland Central School District is happy to report that it was awarded a 2022-2023 Universal Prekindergarten Expansion grant for new full-day and half-day to full-day placements for four-year-old students. This allows the district to convert 60 current half-day UPK students to full-day at no cost to parents starting on February 1, 2023! The grant also allows us to add an additional ten full-day students who can start on February 1st, 2023.
We know that this will make a substantial difference for our families. We contacted UPK service providers to see how many had the space and required staffing to convert half-day to full-day students. The Jan & Niles Davies Learning Center, Benim Academy of Haverstraw, and St. Gregory Barbarigo can accommodate additional students. The district is reaching out to parents of half-day students in these centers to see if they are interested in being added to a lottery that will be pulled on the morning of January 27, 2023.
The district is currently applying for additional grants that increase the number of UPK students served by our UPK service providers. We look forward to the day when ALL of our students have the opportunity to attend UPK!
Snow Day Policy ❄️
The New York State Department of Education ruled that School District’s are able to utilize the remote-learning technology implemented during the coronavirus pandemic to allow students to continue their studies on days when the snow is too heavy for them to commute to school. Some Districts across the state have adopted a policy that will eliminates traditional snow days all together, opting for a remote learning day During inclement weather. North Rockland will utilize traditional snow days until the three that are built into our calendar are exhausted. Once all of our traditional snow days have been used the District will utilize the remote option when possible.

quickly grabs your hand and pulls it towards his face. If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application on our website Hitor.org."
LIfe 🐶
