Faculty Spotlight...Rendi King
I asked our faculty members to write up a little about themselves that I could share with you all. I think it's important that you all get to know who is with your student each day! We are all committed to doing our best and we appreciate your trust in us.
From Rendi King (STS, AP Bio)
I am a mom to a two year old daughter, Joelle, and four year old son, Ezra. I am originally from Oklahoma and moved to Houston in 2015. I worked in the clinical laboratory at Houston Methodist Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the areas of hematology, bone marrow, microbiology and chemistry. I taught clinical chemistry at the hospital and fell in love with teaching, which resulted in me becoming an educator. This is my 7th year in education. Prior to teaching STS and AP Biology, I was an AP Chemistry teacher.
Random/Fun Fact: I am an avid crossfitter and enjoy fitness. A year after I had my second child, I competed in my first novice CrossFit competition and podiumed 3rd place. This was a huge accomplishment for me after having two children.
Goals for My Classroom: If they can exit my classroom having a firm grasp of the content I have taught, while also knowing that I genuinely care about them as individual humans, then I have done my job.
AST Shout Outs!
All of our students do incredible things each and every day! I know that I am going to miss something, or an organization, or a student, so I want to pre-apologize first. I never mean to slight anyone!
I wanted to share some great stories and shout outs to our students and organizations!
Congrats to Isabel on her perfect AP Research Score! We are so proud of you!
Congrats to Zach on his perfect AP Environmental Science Score! What an incredible job!
Congrats to our Math UIL team for their accomplishments at the practice meet this past weekend!
Our AST students in Debate defeated pretty much everyone everywhere the past two practice meets! Way to show off those research (and arguing) skills!
Way to go, band members, and good luck at BOA this weekend! State is an incredible accomplishment and we are proud of you!
Let's hear it for our volleyball team, still in playoffs!
We have a big game this weekend against Conroe--let's show up and support our classmates as we try to make it playoffs! Good luck, Cavs!!
College Spotlight-Preparing for College
In an effort to share as much information as I can about college admissions, testing, and financial aid, and testing prep, have created several new modules in canvas. I will update these and inform you as I update them. Right now they are very heavy with senior things as they are actively applying. I am working to update the junior and sophomore areas and will update the freshmen area in the spring.
Additionally, I will build in some summer assignments for each grade (NOTHING TO STRESS ABOUT) that will hopefully eliminate some of the most common problems and stressors that students have about college prep. I really want our students to benefit from all of the hard work that they put into their classes, their R&P, and their extra curricular activities.
The January Coffee with the Headmaster (information will go out in December) will be all about College Admissions and will cover what each grade level can be doing as well as offer a preview of what the summer assignments will be.
