We hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful fall weather this weekend, ours were filled with raking leaves and a reminder of the changing seasons. Please remember to set your clocks back an hour this Sunday, November 5th as we switch back to central standard time. We would like to wish all of our Washburne families a happy and safe halloween. It is always entertaining to see the creative costumes on display from our Washburne students and staff.

On Friday, November 11th from 9:00-10:00am please join the Skokie and Washburne administrators for our next, “Coffee and Conversation with the Principals”. We will share specific location information in next week’s Monday Memo, but we wanted you to save this date in advance.

Lockdown Drill

Carleton Washburne School will be conducting our annual lockdown drill in conjunction with the Winnetka Police Department on Tuesday, November 15th. Illinois law requires that all schools conduct a drill with law enforcement within the first 90 school days of the year. Prior to the drill, Washburne teachers will be discussing it with students to ensure that they understand that it is a planned drill and to know what actions to take.

Illinois law allows for parents to opt out of the drill with written notice to their child’s school. If you would like to opt your child out of the drill, please indicate so using this form. You do not need to take any action if your child will participate in the drill.

Lanyards and Safety update

Please CLICK HERE to read the safety and security updates we previously shared. Our staff worked with students this past week to help them manage these changes.

These changes will go into effect this week on Wednesday. Beginning on Wednesday, we will be asking to see students’ lanyards as they enter the building. For this week, we will simply remind students to wear their lanyards if they do not have them on when entering the building. Beginning on November 9th, if students do not have their lanyards, they will be directed to the main office to receive a temporary one for the day.

Washburne is collecting extra halloween candy to benefit Lurie Children’s Holiday Wish List. If you would like to donate extra Halloween candy, we have a bin in the main office. Students or parents can bring in donations from November 1st through 7th.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

One of our school’s goals for this year is to increase our staff’s knowledge of project-based learning and to provide opportunities for students to participate in these projects during the year. One fantastic example of this has been taking place the past few weeks with our 8th graders on Team Discover. Students have been tasked with understanding the physical, cultural, and economic qualities of a Chicago neighborhood. In order to do this, students created their own itinerary for a field trip to their designated neighborhood, conducting research and arranging for meetings with local business professionals and other individuals who were able to share their insights with our students. To cap off the project, students will be returning to their neighborhoods, but now will be playing the role of tour guide to other students on their team.

Kudos to Ms. Etter, Mr. Rice, and Ms. Clancy for designing such a thoughtful project-based learning experience for our students.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

Piano students are exploring Halloween music with their new Treble & Bass Clef reading skills. They’re also coordinating both hands together, and will begin duet work this week! Guitar students are picking as well as playing chords, having learned to read not only TAB (Tablature) but also working on reading Chord Charts. Passing C109 (or on the side lawn if weather allows!) you might hear Beach Boys, a folk song, Taylor Swift, or Maroon Five!

Music Exploration & Technology students have done their share of creating this trimester, and we’re only just embarking on the composition unit! They have written relevant raps (and set to rhythm), have played songs from Frozen to Willam Tell, Jaws to Can-Can on Chimes, Drums, and Boomwhackers (™) and will get into technology-based composition this month.

The CW Chorus is busy preparing for our Fall-Winter concert, but we’re not a closed group! Do you like to sing? Come join us after school on a Monday (2:35) or before school on a Thursday (7:50a) – we’d love to welcome you!

Students can attend any & all of the Tues./Weds./Thurs. sessions, depending on their own schedule! Participating students will receive 3 hours a week in the fitness room, providing an opportunity to workout, while being supervised by a certified KW teacher. All students are welcome to join us as we set goals, work on personal training habits, and establish a routine for lifetime fitness.

Technology Survival Skills for Parents

Maneuvering the ever-changing landscape of technology, social media, and phones for students is a daunting task for any parents. This session will increase parent awareness and provide basic skills of how to maneuver through platforms, identify warning signs to look for, and hopefully reduce the stress of parenting students online in addition to in-person.
