BCLA-McCormack Newsletter
June 2023
Hello BCLA-McCormack Family!
Welcome to the BCLA-McCormack newsletter!
Time has certainly passed quickly as we now find ourselves at the end of the school year. Congratulations to both students and staff for the completion of this school year, while also working to merge two different school communities together!
Thank you to our students and families who supported the BCLA-McCormack community this year. With what we have accomplished this year, such as the establishment of a student government at each campus and the launch our early college program with UMass Boston in the 10th grade, we are excited to think about what our future has in store. We are excited about the school we are building together and the increased participation from all stakeholders (students, families, staff, and partners).
We look forward to the return of our students in the Fall, with continued partnership from our families, as we work to create new opportunities to help our students become college and career ready.
Have a great summer!
Principal O. Johnston

The Road to Re-accreditation!
Please see below for information regarding a very important process your child’s high school has started and let your voice be heard.
The BCLA-McCormack high school is applying for re-accreditation. This means we are in a years-long process to prove our school has a clear mission and improvement plan for all parts of our school. We would love for as many family members as possible to complete a survey where you can give us feedback that will be part of our school improvement plan in the years to come.
Notes about the survey:
The survey is in multiple languages. Click the top right hand corner of the screen to see a drop down of all the languages.
Complete the survey in one sitting, you information will not be shared if you start and stop or close the survey.
The survey takes about 10-20 minutes to complete.
The survey is anonymous and does not collect any personal information.
There is a different survey for students and staff. This survey should only be completed by family members of a student at our school. If you are the family of a recent 2023 graduate, please complete this too!

Health Corner
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the school nurse for our wonderful BCLA school, I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for your continuous support throughout this school year. It has been a joy and privilege to be a part of your child’s academic journey, ensuring their well-being and providing the care they need. Now that the school year is coming to a close, it's time for our students to embark on a well-deserved summer break. This is a time for them to rest, recharge, and explore new experiences outside the classroom. Whether they'll be heading to summer camps, spending time with family and friends, or simply enjoying the warmth of the season.
As a school nurse, my door is always open to you and your children. Should you have
any health-related questions or concerns during the summer break, please do not
hesitate to reach out. I will do my best to provide guidance and support, ensuring a
smooth transition into the next school year.
Please make sure to send in an updated Physical and Immunization Record along with
any medications upon returning to school in September.
I wish you and your family a summer filled with joy, laughter, and countless cherished
memories. Thank you once again for your unwavering support.
Kind Regards,
Nurse Kristin
Families with MassHealth Need to Renew Coverage:
Families with MassHealth need to renew their coverage this year in order to maintain coverage. Coverage protections put in place during the pandemic will end soon, and MassHealth will return to standard annual eligibility renewal processes. Please help inform MassHealth families that they need to take the following steps:
Update contact information – make sure MassHealth has their most up-to-date address, phone number, and email so that they do not miss important information and notices about what else is needed.
Report household changes to make sure MassHealth knows about any changes in their household, like a new job, address, changes to income, disability status, or pregnancy.

UMass Boston Talent Search
2022-2023 was another exciting year for Talent Search/Project REACH at BCLA/McCormack! Our wonderful team facilitated engaging workshops for both middle and high school students to help them build their college and career readiness skills. Middle schoolers set SMART academic goals at the beginning of the school year using the Naviance platform and later, completed career assessments, aligning their personal and career aspirations together. In high school, 9th and 10th graders explored career clusters, created resumes, and shared career aspirations with one another. In addition to group workshops and one-on-one sessions, we hosted a number of exciting field trips, including a college visit to Bridgewater State University (check out the robot that delivers food in the photo collage), STEM Day at Northeastern University, the NACAC National College Fair and UMass Boston.
This coming summer, Talent Search/Project REACH will be hosting our annual 5-week summer academic enrichment program at the UMass Boston campus for rising 8th and 9th grade students. BCLA students will have the opportunity to experience a college campus, foster positive connections with their peers and mentors, build leadership, teamwork skills, and more. We are excited to welcome our next BCLA summer cohort in just a few weeks!
As we close out the school year, we appreciate everyone’s continued support of Talent Search/Project REACH! See you in September!
Summer Programs for Students
YOU GOT IT GIRL!
We are proud to announce for the first time ever an all girls basketball camp. We have partnered with You Got It Girl LLC and Emmanuel College to build a powerful experience for our young women.
The ultimate goal of the program is to get our young ladies excited about trying new activities while finding joy through athletics, starting new friendships and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Although this is for beginners in title, we want our middle school young ladies to focus on the fundamentals and develop a deeper connection not just with basketball but a deeper connection with mentoring, self confidence and identity.
The beginner session will focus on developing confidence and building community through the sport of basketball. Each session will also offer other opportunities for physical activity and wellness. As well as some down time for participants to explore new interests and ways to keep their minds and bodies active. Offerings will include coding, visual arts, step/dance, double dutch, boxing/self defense and photography. Lunch will also be provided.
In addition to basketball skills and development, participants will learn about the importance of taking care of their mental, physical and spiritual health. Our MENTAL W3ALTH section will focus on the mind body and soul. This will be where yoga, meditation and recovery come in while teaching our athletes strategies they can use beyond the program.
