A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal
Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,
Gotta love Texas weather! Freezing cold...to shorts and flip flops if you can just ride it out a few days! I hope everyone stayed safe and warm over this 3 day weekend! When they called a bad weather day....I felt like that was Mother Nature's way of granting us an UNEXPECTED blessing of time to recharge our batteries and get caught up (a bit) before we kick off a fabulous February!
Progress reports were viewable in Skyward last Thursday. The 4th six weeks closes on February 18th, which is next Friday! Make sure you are staying on top of your studies, so you do not get caught in a bind in May!
As of Monday, February 7th, remote conferencing (while temporarily out with COVID) has now ended. I sent a more in depth email last Friday (titled "Remote Conferencing Update") to everyone. Please refer back to that email on who you need to notify and what you need to do when you test positive moving forward. I have also added that info below, for your convenience. Thanks!
One more time....
As I stated last week, if your phone or airpods/headphones are VISIBLE DURING CLASS TIME, and there is NOTHING designated on the teacher's lesson plan for you to be using it for an assignment, you will be asked ONCE to put it away, after that it will result in a write up, which will affect your exemptions. *If this is a constant battle for your teacher, they will be calling home, writing you up, and your parents will need to come in for a conference with admin.
Technology usage during class time has become a distractor to your learning, since that cannot happen, your teachers will be planning extensions to the daily lessons to help you use your time more wisely. My job is sometimes unpopular, especially when I have to make decisions that I feel are hindering either the learning or safety for you at school, but it is a big one that I am responsible for handling as your Principal. All teachers have the RED/GREEN MLD signs posted in their classrooms, and have all year, so please ensure you are being RESPECTFUL and following this rule that has been in place all year. I have reattached it below.
*Sidenote - all the hoodies must be DOWN DURING CLASS as you have become masters at hiding those air-pods, too.
*Perk...if you are WEARING YOUR LANYARD/ID you ARE able to use your devices:
- BEFORE school until 8:15AM
- During YOUR designated lunch AND advisory
- When the LAST bell rings at 3:40PM
- No HOODIES on during class time
Attendance (Medical) Note Reminders!
Attendance does count! Please remember to turn in your Medical Excuses within 5 school days for your return. (if you have not turned in Medical Notes up to this point for this semester, you have until MONDAY, February 7th to do so and have them COUNT towards exemptions. *You cannot wait until the end of the year to do this.
- Directly from 21-22 Secondary Student Handbook- “When a student is absent from school due to personal illness, the student upon return, or within 5 days of returning to school, must submit a note signed by a parent giving the date(s) and describing the reason for the absence. Parent notes may be sent by email but must come from a parent’s verified email account. The note or email must be sent to the campus attendance clerk.”
Course Selection and Counselor Schedules:
22-23 Course Selection is in FULL swing, which means our counselors are out of their offices MOST of the day starting February 7th servicing our 2650+ students (including being at RJH to meet one on one with our incoming freshman). This is a lengthy process because they meet one-on-one with EVERY student to ensure they are set up for success (and graduation) here at GRHS. In the interim, if you have a question, their awesome Admin Assistant - Mrs. Ware, will be happy to assist you/your child. Her contact info is here, nware@lcisd.org and will also be linked in the counselors "out of office reply" for easy access for you.
If you do not have an ID at this point, (because you have lost BOTH of them that we gifted you) you will need to purchase a new one for $5 in the library from 8:00-8:15am.
If you choose not to, there will be a HOLD placed on your account for the end of year. (exemptions/graduation/final grades, etc)
- REMEMBER: NO ID ON = No Phone/Airpods/Headphones during the "DESIGNATED TIMES" (see above)! ID's are mandatory everyday! No more temporaries will be issued. If you need a NEW ID/Lanyard- can be purchased for $5 in the library from 8:00-8:15 daily! Lanyards/ID's should be on the second you step through the doors each day. Please make sure you are following this rule as well as being in dress code and to ensure that you are not written up for non compliance.
The front office is open daily Monday- Friday 8:00-4:00pm to assist you. You can also directly email us or call 832-223-4200 during the same hours. We are happy to help!
