Youth Crop Scouting Competition – August 2 at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Education Center in Mead, NE
This is open to students (those completing grades 5-12) from across Nebraska to compete and showcase their scouting abilities in corn and soybean. Each school, club, or other organization may enter one or more teams composed of three to five participants along with at least one adult volunteer. FFA team members must all be from the same chapter. We are trying to determine interest to see if we can organize practices before the competition. Please contact the Extension Office if you have an interested youth or you are an adult who would like to share your knowledge of crop scouting with youth during practice days.

Livestock Achievement Program 2023
Livestock Achievement Program is an additional opportunity for enrolled livestock project youth, is designed to promote all educational aspects of 4-H livestock projects including selection, production, leadership, and exhibition by recognizing youth striving to improve in their livestock project knowledge and leadership.
The program recognizes Members of Excellence across all 4-H livestock project areas, including: beef, sheep, meat goat, swine, dairy cattle, dairy goat, rabbit, and poultry.
The program consists of two levels that require 4-H members to plan and report a broad range of age-appropriate and project-related accomplishments. For each level, the Livestock Achievement Program provides a list of accomplishments from which 4-H members choose their goals. Each accomplishment is worth a specific number of points. Intermediates, ages 10-13, must complete 100 points worth of activities to receive the distinction of Intermediate Member of Excellence. Seniors, ages 14-18, must complete 150 points worth of activities to receive the distinction of Senior Member of Excellence. The Plan and Reports, linked on the webpage, show examples of the project related accomplishments they can choose, or they can identify their own with approval of their local educator.
Applications/Sign up are due June 15th through the application form link on the website. Participants should work on their yearly plan and set their goals at the beginning of starting the program. Plan and Reports, as well as Project Records are due August 1st and sent to 4hlivestockachievement@unl.edu *note this is a change in process from previous years. Youth completing the achievement program and receiving member of excellence recognition in the various species will be recognized during the Parade of Champions, 4-H weekend at the Nebraska State Fair.

Save the Date! June 26- Livestock Showmanship Clinic at Kimmel ....
Poultry Showmanship
In showmanship, you can't just grab your bird out of the cage and plunk it down on a table for the judge to examine. There's a correct way to perform this relatively simple task. You'll be judged on your ability. Practice at home before the show date. Take the bird out by reaching inside and holding him down, with his head toward the door. Put one hand under his body, with your index finger between his legs. Your other fingers support one leg, and your thumb supports the other. Your other hand is on the bird's back. Bring the bird out head first, then close the door. Put his head either under your arm or in your arm's crook. You can put a hand on your chicken's back for control. Then head to the judging table.
Once you place your bird on the judging table, you'll be asked to pose him in various positions for the judge's perusal. This includes showing the wings, the bird's width and length, and the keel. For the latter, you must turn your chicken over. You must show the judge the bird's feet, then the tail. Flip the tail up and down quickly so the judge can see the tail carriage. Be prepared for the judge to ask you questions and make requests for additional bird posing.
