Stonybrook School Weekly Update #12
December 1st, 2023
Welcome to December!
Watershed Ambassador Visit!
The AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassadors Program, is administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Monitoring and Standards. The goals of the program are to promote watershed stewardship through education and direct community involvement, and to monitor stream health through performing visual and biological assessments. Individual AmeriCorps members are assigned to each of New Jersey's 20 watershed management areas (WMAs) to serve as "Watershed Ambassadors" to their watershed communities.
This year, our Watershed Ambassador, Danielle Fischgrund, taught grade 4 & 5 students the importance of our watershed and how to determine stream health by examining the Benthic Macroinvertebrates found in the stream. Students worked in groups to examine water samples, find and identify macroinvertebrate, and sort the organisms to determine the total count and health of the stream. The watershed ambassador will be returning in January to teach the 3rd grade students about the watershed and sources of pollution using an Enviroscape model. Thank you to our Science Supervisor, Mrs. Travaille for setting all of this up for our students!
PE Jam was a huge success!
On December 1st, Stonybrook School hosted PE Jam. PE Jam provides an opportunity for Physical Educators to share their ideas and lessons and collaborate with their peers. We welcomed approximately 67 Physical Education Teachers from around the state of NJ to our building. They spent the day observing and learning from one another. Thank you to our own Stonybrook Physical Education Teacher Mr. Sean Pasieka for assisting in setting up this amazing event.
CHEF Day
Maschio’s Corporate Chef will be visiting our Stonybrook Cafeteria on Friday, December 8, 2023 to make freshly prepared pizza with a variety of toppings.
