2019-20 Lancer Honors

Madison Rotary Foundation Scholarship


Congratulations to our Lancers Rachel, Blessing, Cyrus, Valery, Julian and Autumn, who each have been awarded the Madison Rotary Foundation Scholarship!!


A special thank you to the Rotary Club of Madison for their continued generosity and ongoing valuable support of our Lancers. An award presentation for the scholarship will be available beginning on June 3, 2020 on the Rotary Club’s YouTube Channel.

Wisconsin Delta Scholarship

Our Lancer, Gabe, has been awarded a scholarship by Wisconsin Delta, a Madison chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teacher sorority. These scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who plan to enter the education profession. Congratulations, Gabe!

US Figure Skating Gold Level Achievement Award


Congrats to our Lancer, Jenelle, who was recently recognized by US Figure Skating with the Gold Level Achievement Award through their Graduating Seniors Program.



The US Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award recognizes the hard work of student athletes who have participated in figure skating throughout high school. Selection for this award speaks to a skater's continued commitment to succeeding in their athletic and academic endeavors.

Dell Scholars

Blessing and Destanee both earned the distinction of being named Dell Scholars.

Nationally, 500 Dell Scholars are selected each year to receive a scholarship plus lots of non-monetary supports.


All Dell Scholars receive:

A $20,000 scholarship, a laptop, $500 annually for four years to be used for textbooks and support from the Scholars Resource Network that connects students and their families with resources to deal with stress, debt, managing child care, and life circumstances.

Schuster's Farm Scholarship

Congratulations to our Lancer scholar and Early College STEM Academy student, Gabe. Gabe was awarded a scholarship from Schuster's Farm, recognizing his dedication and excellence. Thank you to Schuster's for such generosity in supporting local students' post-high school plans!

Arndt Family Scholarship

Our Lancer, Byron, has been awarded the Arndt Family Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes excellence in students who will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. Congratulations, Byron!

2020 UnityPoint Health-Meriter Healthcare Scholarship

Congratulations to our Lancers, Faith and Colton, who were awarded the 2020 UnityPoint Health-Meriter Healthcare Scholarship! This highly competitive scholarship recognizes outstanding students who plan to go into the field of healthcare.

US Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award


Senior Lancer Ana has been recognized by U.S. Figure Skating with their Graduating Seniors Silver Award The Graduating Seniors Program recognizes those student-athletes who have worked hard to pursue figure skating while maintaining their academics.

Congratulations to our amazing Lancer scholars, Mete and Mary!

They have been awarded the Madison-Monona Lioness Club Healthcare Scholarship! Such a fantastic way to recognize all of their hard work and their bright futures! Both of these scholars will be attending UW-Madison in the fall.

Project Pitch-It!

Lancer, Nabil, is featured on the TV show “Project Pitch It!” to show how he uses bamboo as a plastic alternative as a way to fight plastic pollution. He founded his business, the World of Bamboo, after seeing all of the plastic at B.B. Clarke beach on Madison’s east side and wanting to make a difference in helping to save the planet.

Madison South Rotary Outstanding Scholar

Congratulations to Cyrus, who was recognized this week by the Madison South Rotary as their Outstanding Scholar. Cyrus was recognized by the organization to honor his dedication to academics, community service, and extracurricular activities.

Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year

Congratulations to Meriem for representing La Follette as a Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year Nominee. She earned a scholarship after a rigorous process that included writing multiple essays, interviewing with a panel of judges, and writing a speech about the issues that youth face in Madison.

Microsoft Office Specialist Certification

A big Lancer congratulations to our sophomore, Charlie, who earned SIX Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications in his Business Technologies 1 class!🎉🎉🎉 Charlie is the first student to pass all six of these exams.

Miss Black USA Talented Teen of Wisconsin

Our talented Lancer, Lilyana, was recently crowned Miss Black USA Talented Teen of Wisconsin. This process consisted of Lilyana submitting an essay and an application as well as being interviewed by the Miss Black USA judges in which she has been selected. Based on her academic and extracurricular achievements she was chosen to represent our state in this national competition.

Our Lancer, Jessica, was recognized by Madison South Rotary as one of their Outstanding Scholars!! This award recognizes strong academics and impressive community service and extracurricular involvement.

Global Youth Institute

Congratulations to our Lancer, Nyah, who was one of five high school students from Wisconsin who recently returned from the Global Youth Institute (GYI) in Des Moines, Iowa, where they participated as the state’s youth delegates. The institute, which took place Oct. 16-19 during the annual World Food Prize International Symposium, is an opportunity for high school students to gather together with peers, educators, researchers and policy makers from around the nation and the world to discuss challenges and solutions to world hunger and poverty. Congratulations to Leslie and Sydni, who were awarded the TEMPO of Madison Scholarship in honor of Betty von Rutenberg. They were recognized as young women with strong character, intiative, leadership and compassion, who share Betty's strong commitment to community and dedication to others.

American Family Servant Leadership Award

Our Lancer, Molly, was awarded the American Family Servant Leadership Award. Molly was one of twelve student athletes from the Dane County area to receive this award.

Arndt Family Scholarship

Lancer Saikou was awarded the Arndt Family Scholarship. This scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship for students who plan to attend UW-Madison. Saikou will be recognized at a reception honoring all the Arndt Scholars. Saikou was awarded the scholarship for his excellent academic achievement and commitment to his studies. NAACP Freedom Fund Leadership Award

Our Lancer, Lilyana, was a guest speaker at the NAACP Freedom Fund Annual Awards Banquet in Rockford, Illinois. Lilyana gave her speech, "Don’t Touch My Hair," in which she describes the challenges that African American women face with hair acceptance.


The NAACP presented her with a Leadership Award. She was among distinguished company, including, Marilyn Hite Ross. Ms. Ross is the first African American and first woman to serve as State’s Attorney in Winnebago County, Illinois. Congratulations, Lilyana! We are very proud of you!

Project Unify Leadership Summit

Six of our Lancers attended a leadership summit at American Family Insurance in November. Student leaders from the La Follette Project Unify attended the summit. Our student leaders paired up with students from other schools to engage in activities and share their experiences with one another. Students were able to learn from one another and collaborate on events they have done at their schools. All students there really enjoyed sharing the importance of inclusion in all schools and their passion for increasing inclusion all around the state of Wisconsin. More information can be found here.

Robert M. Schuster Prose Prize

The first annual Robert M. Schuster Prose Prize was awarded on Friday May 25th as part of Read-a-Latte, our all-day annual Library Celebration. Junior Majenta Stuntebeck won the $3,000 First Prize for her essay "On Behalf of Quiet," while senior Cammy Carver won the $1,000 Second Prize for her short story "Crossroads." This year's theme was "Imagine." Four students won Honorable Mention: Althea Anderson, Jenny Littel, Dija Manly, and Maddie Zwergel.

The award was made possible through the generosity of David Benjamin (Class of '67, and friend of Bob Schuster, Class of '66) and Kathleen Schuster, Mr. Schuster's widow. La Follette English teachers Andrew McCuaig and Keri Hornung organized and implemented this wonderful new La Follette tradition!

TEMPO Scholarship

Tashonna was honored by TEMPO Madison as the recipient of the TEMPO Scholarship in honor of Betty von Rutenberg. Each year since 1997, one young woman heading to college or technical school after completing high school has been awarded the TEMPO of Madison Scholarship in honor of Betty von Rutenberg. This scholarship was created with money provided by the von Rutenberg family and their community in honor of Betty, who was an active member of TEMPO Madison. Congratulations, Tashonna!

Arndt Family Scholarship

Our Lancer, Maleaha, is an Arndt Family Scholar. Maleaha recently learned that she has earned the Arndt Family Scholarship to help support her studies at UW-Madison.

The Arndt Fund provides University of Wisconsin- Madison undergraduate scholarships to deserving students. This fund provides the largest number of needs based scholarship by an independent donor at UW - Madison. Rotary Youth Awards

Congratulations to our many Lancers who were honored on May 9. Forty-nine MMSD students received Rotary certificates and cash awards recognizing their scholastic achievements and contributions to our Madison community! Way to go, Hanna, Jamie, Alyssa, Marichel, Megan, Jose, Remmi, Erin, Jenelle, and Miriam! Thanks for making our community a better place!

Women in Focus, Inc. Scholarship Recipients

Our Lancers Nathan, Jackie, and Jhanae received the Women Focus Scholarship. Each year, Women In Focus, Inc. awards scholarships to deserving college-bound students of color. Proceeds from the organization’s annual “I Have a Dream” Scholarship Banquet and Ball, as well as contributions from supporters are used in funding the awards.

Madison-Monona Lioness Healthcare Scholarship

LHS Students Genna and Jahdai were recently awarded the Madison-Monona Lioness Healthcare Scholarship. They will be recognized at a ceremony by the Lioness Club in June. This scholarship recognizes excellence in students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

Teacher Mikaela Hagen awarded Kohl Teacher Fellowship

We're very proud of Mikaela Hagen, LHS teacher, who has been recognized as a Kohl Teacher Fellows. The Kohl Teacher Fellowship program recognizes and supports teaching excellence and innovation in the State of Wisconsin.


Educators are selected for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. Mikaela met with Herb Kohl to accept $12,000 in grants for our DLI program at LHS.

Young Playwrights Festival

Daniela Loera-Rivera recently was honored by Children's Theater of Madison by having her one act play, "The Talk," chosen to be performed on stage at the Overture Center as part of the Young Playwrights Festival. The performance is on May 2nd. Daniela wrote her play in Mr. McCuaig's Creative Writing class, and it will be one of 10 student plays performed on that day.


Eduardo (Sebastian) Ruiz, Davion Thomas, and Florencia (Flo) Balzano were also recognized as Honorable Mentions for their plays.

Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year Competition

Our LHS Senior, Peter, won a $500 scholarship at the Boys & Girls Club Youth of Year competition (placing second). One student is nominated for the competition from each of the four high schools' AVID/TOPS programs. Peter was the La Follette representative and did an amazing job, sharing his story of perseverance, determination, and leadership!

National Student Support Foundation Conference

Three of our La Follette students attended the National Student Support Foundation conference in Orlando in April. Students representing La Follette include Radha, Peyton, and Madoline. They networked with other SSF clubs around the country to see what kind of projects they do to help their student bodies and to get ideas for what our club could do for the La Follette community. They learned about philanthropy and how small gifts and time can make a huge difference. They participated in a variety of team building activities as well as a financial literacy "bootcamp." They also heard from the director of a Universal Studios foundation and learned about what philanthropy looks like as a career. In addition, they learned about and brainstormed around service in our schools and communities, and completed the trip with a service project at Second Harvest.

Friends of UnityPoint Health-Meriter Scholarship

Six La Follette students were named recipients of the 2018 Friends of UnityPoint Health-Meriter scholarship. Recipients include Aaliyah, Genna, Stacy, Peter, Lillian, and Jahdai are being honored for their commitment to healthcare, community and extracurricular involvement, and academic achievements. Each recipient earned $1,000. Students will be honored at a May 2, 2018 reception.

Bridget Thompson was awarded $2,500 from Summit Credit Union for Project Teen Money. Bridget created a video to inspire her peers to save, spend and give back to the community. Great job, Bridget!

HOSA Future Health Professionals

Four La Follette students attended the state HOSA Future Health Professionals state competition. Lancers Adam, Kalie, Emily, and Lizzy represented our school. Kalie placed in the top five in the state for her Sports Medicine competitive event. Congratulations, Kalie!

La Follette had three students representing us at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta this year. More than 10,000 DECA members demonstrate their college and career knowledge and skills by participating in DECA’s Competitive Events Program.We are so proud of Eduardo, Amie, and Xani! Lancer Sharita Holden was named Madison's Grand Slam Champion at the fourth annual Word Power Grand Slam Finals. She will be heading to Houston for the Brave New Voices Poetry Competition this summer. Way to go, Sharita!
