Webster Weekly
December 8, 2023
WEbster Nation,
Only two weeks left. I can't believe how quickly this year has flown by. Feels like yesterday, we were all crowded into the auditorium to celebrate the holidays and listen to the singing voices of our students. Just like that, we're here again. The next two weeks are filled with so many wonderful experiences for you and this community. Please take a close look at our calendar and the emails we've sent about the upcoming schedule of events. We want to see you here on campus to celebrate the joys of thinking and learning with our students.
Have a wonderful weekend and let's get ready for an amazing last two weeks together.
With gratitude,
- Tedd

TK is busily digging, planting, watering, whispering to, and tending our pollinator plants!! Happily and excitedly a butterfly has already flitted by! We love learning about the plants and animals that help our environment to thrive! TK's garden has expanded to the outskirts of our growing space. Thank you so much to the Boys and Girls Club and Miss Justine for supporting this beautiful project to blossom into fruition! We can't wait to tour you through our pollinator garden at The Learning Expo! See you then! Love TK.

Happy Hanukkah!
Rachel (Opal and Theory's mom) and Jane (their grandma) came to our class today to share the history and traditions of Hanukkah with us. The students had a wonderful time creating menorahs out of pasta, playing the dreidel game, eating latkes and donuts, and dancing the Horah. Thank you for sharing your culture with us.
Mrs. Harris's 1st & 2nd Grade
Ms. Lockwood's 2nd Grade
Room 2 is in full design mode as we are learning how to work with brand new building materials. The room looked like a Winter Wonderland as we carved and spooned and toothpicked our way through our zoo enclosure designs. We are loving this! This is what learning looks like...it's loud and messy.
Mrs. Stark's 3rd Grade
Room 8 is busy preparing for the EXPO. We look forward to showing you our Ancestral Businesses on Friday.

Hello Webster! This is Kenny Morris, the official Room Reporter for Room 19. This week we did lots of fun and interesting activities related to our Expo Project!
The first activity we did was learn about different types of economies. We did a gallery walk around the classroom and learned about concepts like opportunity cost and scarcity. The second activity we did was play dough prototypes, where we created models of a product that could be made from something on our land. The products had to be made from natural resources found on our plots of land. The third and final activity was we negotiated trades with others plots for their products. We talked with other groups, and made agreements by giving them a percent of our product for theirs. We learned a lot and had lots of fun during the activities we did this week. Until next week!
WEBSTER'S EXPO...WHAT TO EXPECT
Only one more week until the big EXPO and we are thrilled to have you join us. As a staff, we've been having some good conversations about authentic learning and what that looks like at an exhibition. It's hard to break the habit of wanting perfect, shiny products to display for parents and community members. However, what do we lose in the process of achieving that. Here's a peek behind the educational curtain. Teachers, by their nature, are incredibly talented project managers. What normally happens in situations like these is the teacher, about 2-3 weeks before exhibition, will snap into GO-MODE and do what's necessary to get kids to the finish line. As educators, we've all done it. Long work periods, chaotic classroom environments as each kid is trying to hurry up and finish a variety of needed pieces, and the teacher is managing it all.
But when do students learn to get there themselves? What's the worst thing that could happen if they aren't fully ready? Struggle is the most optimal place for growth to happen. But we have to give students opportunities to struggle. They have to be allowed to be uncomfortable if we expect them to learn and grow. My proposal is that our EXPO be an authentic display of student process. Some will be finished, some won't. There will be different levels of quality and understanding. There will be both clarity and confusion. There will be all sorts of room for wonder and further inquiry. This is a far more accurate representation of the process of going through these projects with students.
I want our educators and students to be able to be okay with this level of honesty at exhibition. But it means a change in expectation by our community as well. Let me be clear, it's not a lowering of our expectations, but a shift in what we're after. Our community must expect that their kids went through something interesting, something engaging, something difficult, and something and filled with inquiry and wonder. We must expect that they had hardships in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, finishing pieces of the project...that's natural! Real learning is about helping our students to articulate that entire process...the good and the bad. If you we coming on campus simply to see perfect results and outcomes, we are missing the chance to experience the art of true learning and we will reinforce that educators should spend weeks in GO-MODE leading up to these events. I certainly don't want that and I hope you don't either. It's not natural.
At Webster, we're going to take big swings, give kids real things to think about, real problems to solve, and challenge our staff to do the same. We're going to try things and reflect on the outcomes and be committed to growth mindsets. This is what the world is screaming for from our staff and students. So...when you come for our EXPO on December 15, @ 9:00am, you are coming to witness the continuance of something different...a more authentic exploration of learning. We are beyond excited to have you join us. (Photos from last year's Botswana School Project and Spring Deep Learning EXPO)
CREATIVITY AND INITIATIVE
A huge congratulations to Webster's own, Story Bunn! We were super excited to learn this week that Story won the Malibu Library Bookmark Contest. She took the initiative to enter the contest and allowed her creativity to do the rest. In addition to her certificate, Story was awarded a gift bag full of art supplies and books. We are super proud of you, Story!
THEY ARE EVOLVING
The initial invasion of tiny frogs last week saw these little green wonders all over campus to the delight of students and staff. This week, they have morphed from their original green color to a multitude of colors. They have been found in offices, classrooms, the cafeteria, inside bathrooms, and in all sorts of random places around campus. It has created quite the buzz as students are excited to find them each day. We are so lucky to have people at Webster taking the initiative with things like this for the simple sake of wonder and curiosity. It will be interesting to see how the Next Frogtier unfolds. Will we know who's behind it by the end of the year? We shall see.
WE'RE BACK!!

WAIT UNTIL 8TH
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over the kids having a smartphone. Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
Top 5 Reasons To Delay Getting a Smartphone
1 Smartphones are changing childhood.
2 They are distracting and addicting.
3 Smartphones expose your child to...
4 They increase risk for anxiety and depression.
5 Cyberbullying is an important concern.

Developing strong character and valuable mindsets is essential. This remains a major focus at Webster. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity, kindness, and thoughtful problem solving. In addition, we will value these traits in others and recognize outstanding efforts.
Every Friday we sport our Webster Wear to show school spirit and celebrate the coming weekend. Classes with the highest percentage of Webster Wear win the whale for the week. Be sure to show your spirit and pick up some Webster Wear in the main office when you stop in to say hello.
