Principal's Pen
It’s almost time for spring parent-teacher-student conferences! In next week’s RAP you will find the conference sign up link. As a school we are not holding conferences on Friday during conference week. When you view the sign up, if you are unable to find a date/time that works, please email your child’s teacher and they will work to find a time agreeable to all. If you have questions or concerns you’d like to discuss during your conference, feel free to send those items to your child’s teacher ahead of time so they can be prepared with any needed information/resources. We look forward to meeting with 100% of our families for spring conferences!
Unit Notes
Unit A
If you haven't signed up to volunteer or donate to the Valentine's party please reach out to Alyssa Mincke at amincke@cpsk12.org
We look forward to celebrating Valentines Day on the 14th and the 100th Day of School on the 15th.
Unit B
We are still working on narrative writing. Storytelling at home can help that process! Students in Mrs. Rice’s and Mrs. Basham’s class will NOT have math homework this week.
Unit C
Reminder, students can bring Valentines next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. If a student chooses to bring Valentines, they need to bring one for each student in their homeroom.
Calling All Unit C Students
It's Home School Communicator Basketball Time!
The Home School Communicator basketball league is starting soon, and we are very excited to participate in it again this year. We will only have one basketball team, which means there will only be 12 spots available for basketball players and 15 spots available for cheerleaders. If your child is interested in trying out for the basketball team, the tryouts will take place on February 26th right after school until 4:30 pm. The final team will be announced on February 28th.
If you're interested in volunteering to coach cheerleading this year, please contact Mr. Gray at agray@cpsk12.org as soon as possible. You don't have to be a Unit C parent to volunteer.

Specialist News
Ridgeway Families!
Mrs. Lillig here, peeking out from under all the art supplies, giving you an update on what's your students have been creating in the Art Room. So much has been going on in the Art Room!
Unit A started the year with learning about still-lifes. What IS a still life (a collection of items that are "still", most likely on a table), what is NOT a still life (people and animals - portraits, outside nature - landscapes). I think every class had a long discussion on the obvious contradiction in the sound of the term still-LIFE! "Still" they understood; but the "life" part was a little baffling. And yet, we pressed on, and they all created lovely drawings, which we then used torn paper to create a mosaic effect. Now, they are working on being Junior Architects, designing a new home for my garden gnome, "Nutmeg". We discussed what makes their home a "home", and what a 2" tall gnome might need in her home. We have done a preliminary sketch and will soon be using "found things" to make a model home for her.
Unit B has been learning about the abstract sculptures, mobiles, and statics of Alexander Calder. Using a wide variety of materials, they created their own miniature abstract sculptures. We then discovered, or rediscovered, the art app Artsonia. In this app, each student has an online gallery of their artworks where they can upload photographs, title their artwork, and create an artist statement. Every parent should have access to this online site. If not, let me know, and I can get you there (I'm learning the app as I go)! We also started learning basic sewing technique by creating straight stitch needlepoint bracelets. Learning the basic back and forth, up and down, of a straight stitch without going around is an essential skill we will need when we expand our sewing skills to embroidery and hand sewing later. They all did a wonderful job, if not with a few mistakes, and I'm sure you've seen their finished products.
Unit C was reintroduced to their sculptures they made for the Ridgeway One-Read event. All their sculptures were provided a wooden base, and they were given the opportunity to further "flesh out" their sculptures with more clay or foil, and to decorate them with either acrylic paints or with tissue paper and Mod-Podge. These turned out SO beautifully, I really hate to see them leave the studio. I have enjoyed them gracing my windowsills. This past week, we were introduced to the ancient art of basket weaving. We watched a wonderful video about a Hopi woman who weaves beautiful baskets out of the yucca plant. They are currently finishing their own baskets using up-cycled t-shirts as their weaving material. I love how they are turning out!
I am so happy with everything happening in the art room. I see kids trying things they've never done before, and others expanding their knowledge and helping others succeed. As spring arrives, I am looking forward to taking classes outside to do some nature-based art activities.
Creatively yours,
Mrs. Lillig
