The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
Another week in the books. Tomorrow marks the Autumn Equinox and the first day of fall. We warmly welcome the beginning of fall at OHS. The crisp air and changing leaves signal not only a shift in seasons, but also remind us of the shifts for the positive that we have made to improve our academic journey at OHS. We are excited to embrace the learning opportunities, growth, and challenges that lie ahead. Let's make this fall one of inspiration, collaboration and achievement. Here is to continuing our highly successful and enriching academic year!
Pirates you are a part of something big! You belong and will always belong in the Oceanside High School Pirate Community. What an amazing feeling to realize you belong to something bigger than the individual Pirate, but rather part of a 100 year plus Pirate Ship Community!
Regardless of where you may go and no matter what you end up accomplishing the one thing that you have to count on is that you will ALWAYS be a PIRATE!
Stay safe! Know you are loved and belong to the Pirate community - this is the Pirate Way!

OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
Girls Volleyball
Word to the wise...if you want to watch the Oceanside girls volleyball team, you better get there early if you want a good seat.
That's because the Pirates are playing at a high level and leaving their opponents in their wake. Case in point, before a packed Wally Molifua Gymnasium, Oceanside dismantled El Camino for the third consecutive time dating back to last season, 25-11, 25-19, 25-12, in Valley League play Thursday night.
Opposite hitter Faye Naotala led the offense with 11 kills, 5 service aces, and 3 digs. Middle blocker Trinity Faasa added 6 kills, while Mikayla Poumele-Flores 5 kills, 3 aces and 7 digs. Setter Elena Gonzalez-Hughes was a settling influence with 21 assists and 7 digs.
Girls Tennis
In high school tennis, a tied score at the end of a match is like finding a four-leaf clover on a busy street. They are rare, but when the games land on your side you feel like the luckiest team around.
That's exactly what happened to Oceanside in their non-league match against Tri-City Christian Wednesday. Tied at 9-9, the Pirates got out their calculator, punched in the numbers and came away with a 72-60 advantage in games won to earn the victory.
No. 1 singles Laura Ramirez won all three sets (6-0, 6-0, 6-0). No. 2 Brianna Robinson won a pair of sets, while Claire Thompson moved to singles and came away with one victory.
In doubles, which had been a weaknees all season, won three sets for the Pirates. The team of Alondra Mendoza Carballo and Samantha Reyes won two sets, while Andrea Segovia Reyes and Verenice Leon took a set.
Girls Golf looking to sweep away Wildcats
The Oceanside girls golf team continued its winning ways cruising past El Camino, 225-251, Monday afternoon at Oceanside Municipal Golf Course.
The Pirates improved to 3-0 in the Avocado League and 10-0 overall and looked to sweep the Wildcats today at Arrowwood GC. Lia Nance was the match medalist, shooting a 36, while Kassidy Stevens carded a 41. Maggie McMahan and Danyele Bertino each had 49s.
Jersey Mike's Athletes of the Week
Here is a closer look at the OHS Athletes of the Week
Geordan Beamon (football): The senior defensive end added to his team leading nine sacks and recorded a safety as the OHS defeated Escondido, 44-7, in Valley League play Thursday. Beamon helped spearhead a defense that held the Cougars to 4 yards rushing and 117 yards passing in the victory.
Fay Naotala (girls volleyball): The opposite hitter was the main offensive weapon for the Pirates who finished third at the Buccaneer Bash at Mission Bay High School last weekend. Naotala, a senior, led OHS with 50 kills and 6 service aces over the two-day tournament.
Alexis Torres (boys cross country): Torres, a junior, made his biggest leap in performance at the prestigious Mt. Carmel Invitational at Balboa Park on Saturday. Torres dropped 1:37 off last year's time in finishing seventh overall in the junior race with a time of 17:06 over the challenging 3-mile course that is used for the national championships.
Cross Country
Cross country isn't an easy sport to begin with. You put in endless miles over grass, dirt, concrete and any other surface imaginable, in hopes of finishing amongst the leaders. Then, add the largest meet in San Diego County with nearly 1,500 runners ready to sear your lungs, burn out your legs, and rip out your heart and there you have the Mt. Carmel Invitational.
The invitational held at Balboa Park's Morley Field uses the 3-mile National Championship course with a grueling hill in the middle of the grass and dirt trail race.Nominee- Alexis Torres
On Saturday, Alexis Torres and Samantha Chen were up to the challenge.
Torres, a junior, dropped 1:37 off last year's time to finish seventh overall with a time of 17:06. Torres hung just outside the top 10 for the first mile or so before attacking the Upas Street Hill and then he would battle three other runners to finish in the top 10.
For Chen, it was her first 3-mile race and the junior found herself just outside the top 20 and had to push hard to find that top group and finish with a time of 22:58, which was good enough for 20th place. Sophomore Malia Guillen returned from a 3-week hiatus due to injury and medaled with a time of 23:32.
Other medalists included: Oliver Danielson, Jakob Mueller, Kale Vanwagner and Maddox Nading.
Football
The Oceanside football team ran all over Escondido for 315 yards and six rushing touchdowns for a 44-7 rout in Valley League play Thursday night.
The Pirates had scoring scampers from Joseph Vinup (9 yards), Georgie Nua (7 yards), David Daniels (23 yards), Adrian Luna (13 yards), Riley O'Malley (71 yards) and Cory Stevens (31 yards).
Defensively, OHS was just as stout limiting the Cougars to 4 yards rushing and 117 yards passing (8 of 26 attempts)

OHS PTSO
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form 2023-24. If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
Whether you participate in meetings or not, you can support our efforts with a tax-deductible donation. Please go here: PTSO Donation Page (Paypal or CC) or use our new venmo @osideptso. And please join us for our restaurant nights throughout the year.
We typically meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Stay connected with us by joining our Facebook group @Oceanside High School PTSO Parents for Pirates or following us on Instagram @piratesptso.
