CDW Weekly Wrap-Up
February 2, 2024
New Information from Principal Santa
Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Basketball Teams
On Monday, January 29th, it was a great day to be a CDW Knight! History was made as both the girls and boys basketball teams finished their seasons undefeated winning the Northern Valley Championships. It is an accomplishment that has never been done before!
Thanks to all the students and teachers who came out to show their support for both teams. Special thanks to Coach Stefan Wiklinski for being a vital member of the boys team. His presence at practices and every game has inspired us all.
Mid-Year Plans
We have officially met the mid-point of the 2023-2024 school year. One way to prepare for the second half of the school year is to make a plan.
- What did your child(ren) do that was successful in the first half of the year, and what does your child(ren) need to do to move forward?
- Focus on one or two things that will help guide the way for your child(ren).
- Reach out to the teachers with concerns or questions.
- Talk with your child(ren) about school, share your thoughts, and ask open-ended questions such as, "What are you looking forward to?"
Now is a great time to set goals and have discussions about the second half of the 2023-2024 school year with your child(ren).
Student Council SOUP-er Bowl!
The CDW Student Council will be holding its first ever SOUP-er Bowl competition starting next Wednesday, February 7th. There will be two teams: Team Green, made up of 5th & 8th grade students, and Team White, made up of 6th & 7th grade students. Whichever team brings in the most soup cans wins the game and earns SOUP-er Bowl bragging rights!
All cans of soup will be donated to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Hillsdale. To celebrate the end of the SOUP-er Bowl competition on Friday, February 9th, students and staff are encouraged to wear football jerseys.
CDW Debate Team
On Tuesday, January 30th, the CDW Debate Team participated in the second to last Tournament of the season at BCA. Debaters presented cases for and against the United States federal government increasing fiscal redistribution by adopting a federal jobs guarantee, expanding Social Security, and/or providing a basic income.
Teammates Michael Tang and Amy Choe won their Affirmative round against Harrington Park 29 to 22 with their 4th win of the season. Lauren Lombino and Brody Book took home a double win with 29 points in their Affirmative round versus Cresskill and 23 points in their Negative round against Tenafly!
LEAP Grades 5 & 6: InVengineering (Bridges)
Grade 5 and Grade 6 LEAP students attended the InVengineering Expo, as the culminating event of a semester-long unit about bridges and engineering design. Students worked in teams to create a truss bridge that met competition requirements and specifications with a limited supply of balsa wood. These bridges were then destructively tested, and design efficiency was calculated based on the bridge’s weight and the force applied.
Three teams from CDW competed in the Expo. Team Escape Way came in 5th place, Team Diamond Gate Bridge came in 3rd place, and Team G.O.A.T.s came in 2nd place!
Grade 6 Science
The students in Mr. Johnson's Grade 6 Science classes have been researching an assigned volcano and presenting their findings to the class. The categories that were researched include: location, tourist information, type of volcano, formation of volcano, eruptions, and interesting facts. Each presentation was filled with colorful pictures and graphics.
Grade 7 Science
Mr. Gagliano and Ms. Osbahr have been teaching the 7th Grade students about the Digestive System. What better way to learn hands-on than to dissect an owl pellet to observe and analyze what the owl feasted on?
The unit began with the introduction of the Barn Owl's features, adaptations, and food web. Then the students were prepped with information about Owl Pellets and dissection procedures. The owl usually swallows its prey whole, and during the process of digestion, the soft parts of the prey are dissolved and passed on to the intestine for absorption, and then the non-digestible parts remain!
The students began their dissections by carefully breaking off small pieces of the owl pellet. They then gently rubbed the piece to find any bones in the fur. They put the bones in the cup for a future lesson in which they will try to put the prey back together using their bone charts!
