Secondary Schools, Magnet Program and Programs of Choice Accepting Applications

We invite Vancouver students to participate in a variety of full-day magnet programs and half-day programs of choice that help them explore their interests and gain the knowledge and skills needed for their future careers.

Enrollment is free, but students must apply for admission. Applications should be submitted online before the deadline for each program. To learn more about the programs, parents and prospective students can view information on the website or attend an open house.

Planning is underway for Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) and Vancouver Innovation, Technology and Arts (VITA) elementary schools to open for the 2023-24 school year. More information about primary school programs will be available this spring.

Replacement Levy will be on February Ballot

On Nov. 15, our board of directors finalized plans for our replacement levy to be on the Feb. 14, 2023 election ballot for approval. This renewal levy would be for four years, 2024-2027, and would replace the existing education and operations levies that expire at the end of 2023.

The education and operations levy makes up 12.5% of VPS’ budget and helps to pay for basic programs and services including: teachers and support staff, educational programs, special education services, athletics, band and other extracurricular activities, safety and security measures, classroom supplies, textbooks and equipment, maintenance of buildings and grounds, utilities, insurance and fuel.

Reemplazo del impuesto estará en la boleta de febrero

Замена налогового сбора будет поставлена на голосование в феврале

15 ноября наш Совет директоров утвердил план о включении пункта о замене налогового сбора в бюллетень для голосования, которое будет проходить 14 февраля 2923 года. Этот обновлённый налоговый сбор будет действовать в течение четырёх лет, с 2024 по 2027 год и заменит текущий налоговый сбор в поддержку образования и деятельности школ, действие которого истекает в конце 2023 года.

Данный налоговый сбор в поддержку образования и деятельности школ составляет 12.5% бюджета VPS и помогает оплачивать основные программы и услуги, включая следующее: работа учителей и вспомогательного персонала, общеобразовательные программы, услуги и программы специального обучения, спортивные программы, занятия в духовом оркестре и другие внеклассные и факультативные занятия, меры по обеспечению охраны и безопасности, школьные принадлежности, учебники и оборудование, текущий ремонт зданий и территорий, коммунальные услуги, страховку и горючее.

Salmon Creek Robotics Team

In early December, the Salmon Creek Elementary School Robotics club competed in the First® Lego® League Challenge against 12 other teams. They received first-place recognition for their innovation project entry where students identified a renewable energy problem and created a solution.

The Salmon Creek team focused on the importance of bats to our ecosystem and they developed a wind turbine perimeter system including motion detectors, thermal detectors, and a cinnamon scent sprayer that deters bats from flying near the wind turbine. There was significant interest in the cinnamon scent solution by a senior wildlife specialist at PGE, and the idea may be adopted by the energy company. Congratulations, team!

Doernbecher Children's Hospital Toy and Donation Drive

Lily Strickland, a 5th-grade student and class president at Hough Elementary School, wanted to give back to the hospital and medical team that saved her life when she was an infant. This holiday season, she organized a toy drive and fundraiser for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, with the goal of raising $2,000. Her outreach and efforts were so successful that she exceeded her goal, raising $2,353.74! In addition, on December 17, she was able to deliver a full truckload of toys to the children’s hospital.

"I really enjoyed being able to help the kids," Lily said. "They deserve the joy of Christmas. I'm thankful for everyone who supported me throughout the process."

Lily rallied her community to participate in the cause, with several local toy stores and children’s stores offering donations. She also received tremendous support from the Hough Elementary School community. Congratulations, Lily!

Campaña de donación y de juguetes para el Hospital Infantil de Doernbecher

Lily Strickland, una estudiante del 5º grado y presidenta de la clase de su grado en la Escuela Primaria Hough, quería demostrar su agradecimiento al hospital y equipo médico que le salvó la vida cuando era un bebé.
